Help me? I'm new to this forum, so hello everyone.

I hope that someone is able to help me out, I bought a freelander yesterday, took it a test drive and it spluttered along the road and blew up.

The revs were erratic, I got about 500m and it came to an abrupt stop. The engine will not restart. There was an issue with the water pump (was pouring water out the side of it). When it stopped there was a puff of thick white smoke from the exhaust. The timing belt has not snapped and visually everything looks okay. Head gasket does not appear to be leaking either.

Any help that anyone can offer would be appreciated.

I bought it as is, but got it at less than the scrap value, the cost and time involved is not an issue, just need to get to the bottom of the issue

Head Gasket is gone, coolant pipe is full of white gunge and the engine is full of muddy sludgy oily water.

Whoa whoa whoa.... he said time and cost is not an issue. In which case he can do a search in the forums and get all the info he needs to rebuild the engine with the relevant upgraded bits surely?

degnan, also have a look on the MGF forums as they use the same 1.8 engine

By the way yours isn't an LR2 either

Spoilsport

As long as the blocks ok and the liners haven't sunk these engines are almost infinitely rebuildable :D

need to find why the HG went - age , over heating etc then sort out with new pump/belt/tensioner and MLS gasket .
