Sounds like a head gasket or water getting into the cylinders. Most probably a gasket / head problem. Without a compression test hard to say. White smoke can be water in the fuel. Was the engine warmed up when you arrived. old scam if the engine starts only when warm, could be a compression problem.

Not a wind up, I plan on reading posts on rebuilding the engine, starting to strip the head down to check if it worth rebuilding, has a knackered water pump, so that is the most likely cause of the HG to blow. The car was warm when I took it a test drive. I have my lwb frontera estate to drive around in just now, the freelander is just something to do in my spare time.

I'm kidding about stripping it ;)
There's no reason why you couldn't fix it if you have the inclination, and I hope you do as too many are being scrapped.
As others have said, it's fairly definitely a head gasket issue. Shouldn't be fatal, although many can't be bothered.
