Hey everyone!

I know there are many many posts about the EGR on a Freelander but I think this one may be different (apologies if it's not :p).

So, last month I purchased a TD4 Freelander 2 2007, not been serviced since 2014 . I was meant to do it when I get back to England (currently in Scotland) this week but on the motorway at 3am, got into limp mode. Managed to get home and there was a single code P042e. I've reset this code using a cheap code reader but it keeps coming back and going into limp mode.

I've tried just blanking the EGR flow, but turns out one of the many previous owners already did this with the plates o_O

If you search up the code, it's something about the solenoid in the EGR being stuck open. However, I took off the EGR and to me, it looks fine. There was some build up of carbon but not a lot at all. I managed to even push the solenoid by hand and it opened. Default position when I took it off was closed...

I ordered a new EGR and cooler but I want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Any help or ideas would be good, thanks :cool:

Oh and also, do I need to do any calibrations or anything software related for the new EGR.

The EGR is second hand and stock btw, if that makes a difference.

That code doesn't come up in the LR code library. All LR codes are in my signature below.

And yes, there are calibrations to run after anything in the air path is replaced.

@Nodge68 It is in the LR code library, Here:
P042E Exhaust gas recirculation control - stuck open.
You're quite right, I missed it somehow.

If you've checked the valve and it's closed, then it's likely the feedback potentiometer inside has failed, making the ECM see that the valve is open, even though it isn't.

Thanks for the quick reply!! Okay, cool I'll try replacing the whole thing and see if it sorts the problem.

I'm having trouble finding any info regarding the calibrations... is this something I can do myself or do I need the assistance of a "professional" :p

An air path calibration needs to be done with suitable diagnostic equipment, JLR SDD has it under the service routine (in theory it should be done every couple of years at an LR dealer, but probably never is). I believe that other more DIY type diagnostic units can also do the calibration.
It's worth getting a decent diagnostic unit if you're planning on keeping the vehicle, as they'll pay for themselves very quickly if you have a fault that needs in depth diagnosis to solve.
