Would you tow up to your vehicle limit

Depending o which injun it has this will tow in the region of 1.8tons.not bad, and quite possibly 4wd.

Not 1.8 tonnes of trailer complete with horse, tack, water etc etc....I wouldn't. That's just not enough tow cap however you juggle it. I'd like to see that pull a horse trailer off road (flat wet grassy field, muddy track, etc) after all horse trailers are taken off Tarmac on a regular basis.

Anyhoo that is not a horse towing vehicle...proper hoss pullers are big, square, have a roof, the aerodynamics of a fridge, do 22mpg, have a tow bar, a whip in the boot, straw on the carpets and smell of horse ****.

I wouldnt is not the same as unsuitable.so a range rover sport overfinc h will be a great tow car .....until taken off tarmac with them little skinny tires

Nope I agree, wouldn't isn't the same as unsuitable. A freelander, for example the tow cap is 2000kg, it's legal for my usual tow weight but I still wouldn't.
:p

I regularly tow car trailers, box trailers and caravans loaded and unloaded with both the gaylander and the disco without a worry or care in the world, aslong as everything is secure ive never encountered a problem, ive towed a horsebox with horse in it twice and both times felt like i was walking on eggshells, pulling away, stopping and cornering felt alien as the horse obviously moves, pre thinking every manouvre way before you would normally to make everything as smooth as possible, tryin to pre emp if mondeo man is going to cut in at a junction causing you to brake and so forth, i found both times as stressfull as fcuk, obviously if your a regular livestock puller it becomes second nature but i gotta be honest its not my favourite past time and one i do my best to avoid

Apart from good sense and not causing injury to other road users, I think us horsey people often feel very strongly about these subjects because its a member of our family in the trailer.

And before you laugh I have owned one of mine for 31 years  longer than a lot of you have been alive :D

We see videos like this one, its OK to look it has a happy ending, and cringe. With animals is about more than what is strictly legal, I hate seeing the RIP posts on the horsey forums, particularly when they are preventable with a bit of common sense.

Credit to Rog, I know he has nothing but good intentions, just disagreed with him in the past.

He has posted on the other forum asking views of people who actually tow horses on the "legal but not safe" issue.

Will be interesting to see the responses.

I tow our little carvan with either the Disco or the wifes Mondeo .. absolutely fine.

I tow the nieces and sisters horses with the Disco only. Two horses and a full horse trailer with passengers in the Disco, and I stick to under legal trailer speeds, braking as little and as softly as possible.

I have towed well over the legal limits in the past, horses and 'stuff' with cars, vans and Land rovers, but it's only been Land rovers that have ever always felt like you weren't in danger. Doesn't matter what the 'cargo' is, tow it as a balanced load at reasonable speeds with reasonable care, to suit the cargo, and it'll mostly be safe. Apart from other feckwits on the road, mind!!

This is the size trailer i usually tow with the Freelander

I'm not a member of that particular forum but its open if you google it. I found it.

They are still avoiding the crux of the topic. Legal v safe. The arguers are those who tow with cars then go on to admit they won't drive on grassy fields. They must travel to shows, park on the road and walk the rest of the way then. Clever.

Sorry but nothing will persuade me a car can safely tow a horse trailer "legal" or not. And how much of the law is based on towing horses?

I wouldnt take any car and trailer combo onto a grassy field if i could help it but the caravan club do it week in week out and they'd recomend Rwd cars for towing, like a tractor unit on an artic.

towed with a carlton and a cavailer one front one rear, on road not a lot of differance but on grass rear wheel drive was a lot better in my oppinion plus better steering lock on rwd (beware auto's tho took some getting used to on wet grass rwd):)

Yep carltons senators and seirras used fo be the tow vehicles of chioce prior to soft roaders/the 4 x4 explosion
