Re the picture below. I'm supposed to have a tapped hole here right? I believe a stud screws in which the P-gasket locates over and the ally casing is then tightened with a nut on the stud.

Mine is bldy welded up!! WTF? (Edited: on second looks, it could be an old sheared off stud)

Has anyone else had this? I guess I'll have to drill & tap. I assume it's M8 x 1.25 thread but does anyone know how deep?

Hi Karl, Did you shear it off or was it never there? Could you not drill it and use a stud extractor on it. It is an m8 1.25 but not sure on length. Best of luck Mick.
Ps did you ever move?

Hi Mick, some other bugger has sheared it off! I'll look into a stud extractor, thanks for the info.

Did I ever move? Not yet; planning application was refused so now looking at an appeal...and obviously more money...:(

I would say its not the end of the world as the other 3 seal the water way, but then Im not sure what the 4th one actually holds on? if its nothing critical ignore it.

Im not so sure otherwise surely the op would have mentioned the tensioner was insecure?

The stud for the tensioner pulley dosent screw into block but into the casing.Behind the tensioner pulley is the casing which is held onto the block by a nut on a stud. its this that has sheared on karls engine.

Yeah, that's part number 8 in the diagram, the one one the left of the pulley is the stud which goes into the block, I only did my p gasket a couple of days ago

Thanks for all your help guys. I was going to get a stud extractor but then I was sold a set of LH drills (I thought the guy was taking the p when he suggested it). So, using the ally casting as a drill guide I spot-drilled through onto the stud to give me the exact centre and then drilled anti-clockwise with my LH drill, it did feel a bit weird drilling in reverse.

This didn't budge the stud so I drilled tapping drill size and re-tapped and thread locked a new stud in place. Job was a good-un! This stud is the location for the bottom hole of the 'P' gasket (bottom of the 'P' effectively) and is also one of the the securing points for the bolting down of the ally casting which holds the water pump, steering pump, alternator and belt tensioner. Mick, you were spot on.

With that sorted, new timing belt fitted with updated tensioner/idler and new water pump. Now all back together.

A good day :)
