Good morning!

Wanting to change my fuel filter and noticed that the original LR filters are made by UFi.
I found UFI filters for sale, which is almost half the price of the LR ones. Only difference I see is the black paint.

I really don't want to use the cheap filters, as I've heard they're not the best quality.

Anyone had any experience with these UFI filters and know any other sources for them?

Thank you

HI,

What makes you think the original filters are made by UFI?
Interested to know .

Cheer

Hi neilly.

It's written on the side of the original filter.
They also mention on their website that they're OEM for some JLR models, including the Disco 4 and RR.

OK, cheers.

How many miles have you done to still have the original filter fitted? or was it always dealer serviced?

But were they original fitment for TD5's ? as you wrote " sone JLR models and D4 RR does not necessarily include the TD5.

Interested to know, as you often here mahle etc etc are original fitment.

Cheers

I've always used original LR (last change about 1 year ago @ 160k miles) but lately the price has gone up considerably, hence the search for a decent alternative. I don't think Mahle, Bearmach etc are worth the risk tbh. The price may be appealing but I was put off by a reputable mechanic telling me that the filtration technology of these aftermarket filters isn't up to scratch, namely the mesh spacing being a bit larger than the original LR filters. Something to do with the manufacturing process of each manufacturer. Of course people say it's ok to use aftermarket stuff, because the negative effect isn't immediate, but I would rather spend a bit more now than having to deal with a knackered injection system later on.

The reason UFI mentions Disco 4s and RR on their website is because these are the latest models. Unfortunately I can't check the 2003 page that mentions the Disco 2, but I would assume they were the OEM for it, seeing as the original filter bears their mark

EDIT: fitment of aftermarket parts should be the same, but I noticed for eg, that for my previous car, the aftermarket VW oil filter leaked a bit, which doesn't happen with the original filter, so there is definitely some differences.

Thanks for the reply.

I normally use the std fare Cooper , Mahle filters as supplied in a normal service kit off of the bay of flea.

I had not heard that there was a difference between the reputable brands and the UFI filter TBH.

Good luck in your search.

Cheers

I do think the price of original LR filters is absurd, but looking at the price of those UFi filters, even though they're almost half the originals, they're still 4 times the price of a Mahle one. Surely there must be a difference in quality somewhere...

At the end of the day we are in the UK/EU, the quality of fuel here is pretty high. Ive been using Mahle/Fram for years and never had an issue.

Mann also make a fair few filters for the TD5 too

If you where going somewhere with dodgy fuel then its worth the extra cost but here nah

UFI are one of the worlds largest filter manufacturers, and producing filters for all vehicle markets.
I saw their video once showing how oil their filters are made start to finish and placed in a box, one of the final procedures was the filters traveling along the line and splitting off to visit a paint booth and given a colour and then on to have a name and logo screen printed on the side, that's the same filter but in a different colour and name.
There could have be thirty or more production lines doing the same thing for the range of oil filter for another engines.
Names for example UFI, Ford, Jaguar, Peugeot, Volkswagen, Maserati, Fram, Mann and the rest, etc etc and maybe even Champion.
Same thing with their air and fuel filters same filter, just another name and logo stamped on it

UFI supply the F1 teams with their filters so that would be good enough for me. :)

Don't forget there's a few counterfeit items out there and a reason fo a lower price I understand from the tv programs.

And now back to work :(

Thanks for the input. Interesting to know!

Unfortunately I can't tell if it's fake or not, but for £25 it better be the real deal!

Mahle are also oem for newer ingenum engine, so it's all irrelevant, buy what you can afford/happy with
Very true

There was actually a guy on another forum (can´t seem to find the link) that cut the original LR filter open, as well as an aftermarket one, and what he found was that the LR filter was made with some sort of velvety material, very fine and smooth. The aftermarket one was made with a paper element and very flimsy.

These engines are very picky as it is, I would rather not give it any excuses to fail...

On a different note, I emailed UFI to check for distributors in the UK and the guy told me that they´re opening their own warehouse this month down south and they will stock the LR refs.

Saves us having to deal with potential fakes and over inflated prices (hopefully)

I wouldnt say the TD5 is picky at best! It's arguable one of the best engines LR ever produced, some reaching into the mad beyond of 500k+ (seen a '99 Disco on 650k before original engine n all )

That said I always use genuine or as close to genuine as possible for oil filters.

:D:D:D I did ask him, he said x2 head gaskets, a skim, 3 turbos, set of injectors and a piston. The rest was original, I was shocked. Think it was the first London to Brighton I did about 4 years ago, he'd come down from Scotland, frequently drove up and down the country, hence the crazy mileage!

I agree, great engines, but only if you look after it properly. Give it Aldi Cola instead of genuine Coke and it has a fit :D
