hi guys,
noticed some transmission oil leaks on a recently bought disco II, any idea what they can be and if they can be done a home instead of bringing the car to the dealer;

I had a TD5 auto once, that decided to undo the unions of the oil pipes on the LHS of the auto-box, as per your pic 2.

My first suggestion would be to get in there and check the tightness of those nuts.

thanks guys, will try the suggestions, but does anyone know what these are called; especially the round thing in the first pic. Is there a seal located underneath?

Oil pipe unions.

The round thing is called a cover plate and cover a hole which gives access to, iirc, the Torque Converter. There is no seal.

but I have noticed the oil leaking from that specific location, can I just unbolt it and see what the issue is; I assume I need to drain the tranny oil before I do that?

you can unbolt it it should be dry ,theres no oil in bell housing only a torque converter, theres a cooler pipe nearer the top of box if its not either of the pipes box will need to come out

No you don't, as said by JM the bellhousing should have no oil in it.

Are you sure it's leaking from there and not higher up then running down?

Have you checked the tightness of those oil pipe unions yet?

Dave

did check the bolts if they were not loose but they seems quite ok. I would be very happy if the oil only leaked from one place, as I am thinking of the transmission oil cooler pipes ( see first pic). Would undoing those and wrapping the threads with Teflon work?

I think you mean your second pic don't you? The first pic shows the cover plate.

PTFE tape won't work on the oil pipes, they have rubber seals on them which may be damaged or worn. I suggest you take one off to assess their condition.

Dave

Have you checked the tightness of the oil cooler pipe joints?

don't the pipes starting at the tranny have an O ring, maybe that has deteriorated, the car was standing for quite some time at the car dealer before I bought it.
What do you mean by "pipes are sealed by compression not thread" jamesmartin?, not that technical at the moment :)

just found out a few days ago that the LHS transmission cooler pipes are also leaking and chances are that they may become unattached at the crimp.
is it possible to remove that crimped rubber part from the cooler line and replace with an other rubber hose that is held in place with 2 jubilee clips?

It is possible yes, but how successful it would be is another thing. The oil circuit is under significant pressure and the consequences of the pipe coming off and dumping all the autobox oil would be BAD, very BAD !!!

I know it's more money but if you buy the correct part it will work and your problem will be resolved. Make sure any solution you choose includes new O-rings.

Good luck

Dave
