I was underneath my 90 looking for a noise:)

And noticed at both ends of the support for the transfer case that goes from one chassis rail to the other is really badly rusted, really bad. It has to be replaced.

It looks like it un-bolts?
Is it that simple?

And what is the part #, I looked at Famous Four but it does not seem to be listed.

only one mount supports the transfer case plus the gear box, only 300 tdi use the cross member as the mount, which is anr3713
 
Yes but once you have unbolted it you will have to bar it out as it will be very tight between the rails, when refitting / replacing grease the ends of the x member and jack it into place :)
 
If you're going to replace it, you could just get the grinder out. Use a jack to spread the chassis rails to get the new one in. Be prepared to find rust in the rails where it meets them.
 
So, I got the cross member out this morning and guess what? !!! R U S T !!!

Both sides od the chassis rails need major repair work.
I need a welder.

Good news is I know a really good welder.

Any tips or anything I need to know before I get started?
This will be the first time welding on Pumkins chassis.

I will post pictures later.

Wow, yes i have a tip: if it's cut off and replace get real good at welding first, shoddy welding, under serious load, it probably got the potential for a stress fracture right the way across.
If it's patching, well, again actually, get good at it first. Or get someone who knows how to weld properly. Trust me, i was awful at welding when i started, i didn't really know the difference between good and bad welding.
 
I have a really good welder, he came and looked at it yesterday and says no problem.

I think I will also change the clutch while I have all or this out.
 
OK, job finally done.
Chassis patched and new clutch installed, all good.
Question:
Why why why did land Rover build such a beautiful vehicle, great engine, incredible off road abilities but create such a horrible chassis?
It seem like they designed areas on the chassis just to hold dirt and moisture?
AND the metal is sooooo thin. I was always impressed when I looked at the chassis because it looked so much bigger than other vehicles that I have owned/own, until I actually saw the thickness of the metal, really really thin!
My Defender is a 1998, I have a 1995 Jeep Wrangler and a 1979 Jeep Cherokee Chief. Both of these Jeep vehicle have real solid thick chassis with very little rust. The Cherokee spent its life in Colorado with brutal winters and salted road and still has a great chassis.
Considering the price of a LR Defender one would have thought that the chassis would be solid but everywhere you read people are patching and replacing?
Why ?

OK, my rant is over.

My next plan is to import a new galvanized chassis for my Pumkin :)
She has been off the road for almost 6 months and I cant believe how much I missed driving her.
Clearly a far superior off road vehicle than any thing else I have ever owned.

Next question:

Who makes the best new galvanized chassis?

Series were a copy/inspiration of the jeep. Guess they didn't pay attention to the chassis
 
Why is the chassis so crap you ask. My theory is that way back when the Landrover was first built, built-in obsolescence was the car industry's way of making sure vehicles wore out so they could sell you another one. Body work and chassis corrosion was their way of achieving that. (I think back to my first car in the early seventies, which was a mid sixties Austin. Good engine but body was completely shot at eight years old and had to be scrapped). Land rovers continued with their same basic original chassis design to the end, corrosion traps anorl. The industry eventually realised that selling a vehicle with a long term anti corrosion warranty (like wot you get now) was a good move. That said, late model defenders seem to be better, my 2012 has much improved factory anti corrosion protection with absolute minimal defects after 4 winters (and a bit of waxoyl last summer to be safe).
