2010 Range Rover 5.0 SC. Sitting at the lights and felt and heard a small bang. Thought someone had hit me. Pressed accelerator and really bad grinding noise. Same in reverse and in all auto gears. Grinds when putting into park. Won’t drive. Transfer case switches from H to L no problem. Underneath when in drive neither props are turning and very hard to hear exactly where grinding is coming from but neither props are turning. No warning lights and no MIL. Park does not hold the vehicle!
Thoughts?

Morse chain in the transfer box has broken maybe?

Could be the output shaft spline which has failed. If the spline isn’t lubricated during assembly then it can fail through fretting corrosion. Common issue on the 6HP26X models, less common on the 6HP28X like yours.

A bloody Freelander and defender thing as well 😵‍💫

Could it be that the transfer box has at sometime in the past got stuck with the gears only just in mesh for hi range and it's finally let go?
Might be worth seeing if you can tell if it is moving when you switch between hi and lo range

Mine did this after pressing buttons (getting excited with new purchase) managed to get it into low range and now it’s stuck in low range (switch not responding)
