Hi,
I have a Defender 90 on a 2003 plate, which has traction control.
Recently whilst away in Wales with LROAC, I was having a bit of a problem getting over a rocky obstacle.
When I finally got over it I was talking to the guide and he said he thought my Traction Control wasn’t working as my front wheel was spinning and losing traction.

I then watched one of the other lads in his new 2008 defender, and he went over it as if the obstacle wasn’t there.
I’m wondering if there is a way of testing if the TC is working.
The TC light comes on with the ignition pre-checks and then goes out.
It only ever comes on in moments of traction loss, then goes out again once traction is restored... as if it is working properly.
But the wheels do spin.

I remember on my 2000 plate TD5 Disco that had TC, whenever it came on there was an thumping noise which i thought was the brakes being pulsed on the spinning wheel to send the power to the other wheel.

My Defender makes no such noise.

I’ve rang my local Land rover dealer to ask how they would check for this..... they assured me my Defender doesn’t have TC !!!!!!!
Doesn’t inspire me to take it to them.

I've just had the magic black box connected to the ECU on it has no error codes stored?

Any idea's boys.....

Cheers

Carl

My Defender has ABS and apparently TC. I know the ABS works but as for the TC I can't be sure.
All lights light up and go out as they are supposed. In the recent snow I had no problems so can only assume that it was working. The TC light was flickering on and off in the snow which suggests it was sensing and doing something.
I believe that the TC is part of the ABS system as I cant see how else it could control individual wheels. On my Volvo the TC merely cuts the ignition until the wheels start to grip. Pain in the 'arris when trying to overtake because with 250bhp the wheels are always spinning. :D

Shifty,
It is part of the ABS.
I know thats working as on ice a few months ago it worked.

As for this TC, I'm wondering if it doesn't work if the wheel is spinning too much.
Perhaps it only works at lower wheel speeds?

On my mate's 2008 XS Defender the traction control only works when in 1st gear low range, it also has anti-stall so you just cant stop the thing unless you put your foot on the clutch. Bloody fantastic off road, if a bit too easy!

is it just me or does that sound a bit dangerous ? say your clutch cylinder went and you couldnt disengage the clutch how would you be able to stop it and i know you could just pull the gear stick into neutral but in the lower gears with the engine trying to pull the car its not always easy to do
