Hi, So last weekend I stripped the gearbox off with a pal and replaced the crank shafts oil seal. Built her back and all was good in my world... For about 5 days... I drove around 700 miles this week and have noticed a slight intermittent vibration at about 30 - 50 mph. After looking around on. Here all my symptoms point towards the torque converter. Although I did remove it from the fly wheel when I did the seal it wasn't removed from the gearbox. So im quite sure it's warn and not damaged from the change. My question is, where can I get a recon unit, don't really want to fit a second hand unit as u never know what your getting. Also I drive quite alot in the week. On average 200 miles. Should I park it up for a week or so or am I ok to run it..

I took the car out today, tested it on a sloping hill near our house, nothing steep. First when up in auto, 25mph for about 3 seconds had a really strange vibration, almost like when you are on the motorway doing about 70 and someone opens a rear window.. as that went when i got to around 35mph a very small vibration was felt. almost like a VERY small rumble strip on the motorway or cattle grid.

Then i tried in manual. Nothing.. put her in 5th at 25mph and put my foot to the floor and it stayed in 5th, didn’t drop into any other gear. I continued to drive for about 5 miles in manual and no vibrations of any kind.

It may be worth mentioning that it doesn’t do it every time in manual. Average 5 mile trip, 4 -5 times... Got a price for a Torque converter £850 from land rover. Don’t really want to take the gearbox out, spend a grand just for it to still be there

There is a company that does recon TQ's.....the problem you seem to have is the Lock Up Clutch friction material is wearing out and causing juddering...

The L322 Box limits slippage to about 3% when not in 5th and Locked up above 5oish....this slip is controlled by the LUC...if it is slipping it judders...

The Petrol ZF Box gives warning like yours is doing of juddering like a cattle grid...the Diesel box just lets go all of a sudden....

Thanks for the input Saint. I was looking over previous threads and saw people talking about the LUC... I'm not sure what this would involve. Would this mean the TC was on and I'd need a new gearbox?

That made for good reading thanks. I'll going to give them a call tomorrow and see if I can buy one off the shelf. I can use the ramp at a pals garage but don't think he would be to happy with it being off the road for a week or so while they turn it round. The main thing is, a couple of people had been driving like that for a while so I can keep using it for the next week or so. I had some money for a facelift bumper and head lights... Looks like there going to have to wait lol

Thanks for all the help at least I know where I'm going with this now.. Going to upload some picks to my profile tomorrow once I've got it cleaned

Let us know how you get on - I have an inkling mine will need doing in the next year so keen to see how you get on if you decide to replace....

Update,
I spoke to them today and I've got to give them a call with my gearbox number. It should be around 450 so as soon as I have it I'll get it fitted and send my back. I'll let you know how I get on

Knock knock, time to wake up this thread :) @ drewsp38 , did you do it?
Also a quick question for the gurus: I am having no issues at the moment (touch wood) but when I did the oil change approx 7 months and 1k miles ago, I did have a bit of shine on the bottom of the sump once all the oil was drained from it. So should I change the TC now or wait and see?
Thanks in advance to the gurus who reply ;)

P38? If it's a P38, I'm not aware the the TC is a particular problem but if it's a ZF4HP22 then it could be a clutch on the way out.

Sorry for the confusion, I was 'assuming' because the thread started about L322 all would magically know I was asking about TC on a L322. My apologies for assuming ;)
