Hi all

Just after a bit of advice. Im thinking of buying a N reg disco 1 300tdi in imaculate condition... ie no rust! from simmonites, west yorks. It has only done 7000miles, they will change the cambelt, give it a full service and 3 months warranty. I know its a bit more expensive as its a dealer but does this sound reasonable or a total rip off!!

Thanks in advance

Oli

do you mean 7000 or 70,000?

If only 7,000 i'd be concerned that a vehicle of that age has done so little miles, can't be good for the engine.

Right... ive made a complete arse out of myself here!! I wrote it just before dashing out (lame excuse i know!!) He wants 5700 and its got 70000 miles on the clock. Sorry for the cock up!!

5700 anuther cock up? seems a little dear to me

That price is simply crazy. A service and cambelt on a TDi costs about £150 in total for all the bits - and it's easy to do yourself. That's all it's worth. 3 month gttees can be bought of the internet for £100.

I can't get over that price - £5700 !!!!!

I bought a P-reg TDi 300 5-door a couple of months ago with 8 months tax on it for £900

As other have said you could buy a very nice TD5 for that money with all the toys.

Thinking about depreciation (the highest single cost of car ownership) the value of this £5700 14yr old car will tumble as soon as it leaves the garage.

If it's as nice as you say I reckon it's worth £2200. If you are, just for conversations sake, prepared to accept that for a moment, it means that you have lost £3500 - imediately.

If you then keep this car for say 3 yrs, it is now 17yrs old, how much do you think it is worth in 2013? Perhaps £1000?

Obviously this is all hypothetical but what it would mean is that this car has cost you nearly £1600 pa just in depreciation alone??

I would say either A. buy a very nice TDi 300 for £2000-ish or B. buy a lovely TD5 2002 ES for about £5700.

If you continue down this road you've highlighted it will be a faster way of losing money than even the major banks could manage !!!!

Thanks for your honest replies. Ideally i want a mint 300tdi so it will be easier to work on and will be less expensive to sort out if things go wrong unlike the stories ive heard about early td5 engines. But guess if i do want a 300tdi i should just leave some ££ left over and spend about 2-3000. Cheers

The TD5 aint so bad to work on. I've had mine 2.5 years and have repaired loads of niggly faults so far. Nothing too difficult at all.

The TD5 has some nice features. I like the ACE active cornering and the self levelling air suspension alot. The curry hook is also dead useful:)

Cheers, Andy

How muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ? 5700 ! you really should study the autotrader and ebay a bit more ,my disco cost me 1700 2 months ago ,its a 97 p reg model in nice condition but thought even at 1700 i was going a bit over the top but must admit got fed up looking and was on a time limit aswell , but 5700 is just stupid ,is the garage ran by a guy called Arthur by any chance ?

Right first off Simmonites realy know there stuff with landys.Secondly it will be warrented by them no third party.Thirdly they are way way over priced compared with others selling landys and I mean over priced, you only have to look on the web site to see that.Just bought my self a TD5 and loving it and if you are worried about TD5 problems have a look at discovery 2 web site.

we just paid 4990 for a td5 auto es, black, vgc, 100k miles. a couple of months ago. no problems yet. touchwood. knew nothing about them till i joined this forum. lots of niggles seems to be the norm but fairly easy to work on. long may it continue:)
