After many many months hard work in my discovery 1 v8 I finally got it tax and tested on thursday (last week) and I haven't made any long journeys just mainly pottering around and haven't even opened it up as I want to let it run itself in seems its been sat arpund for 6 years, however since Thursday (its Wednesday today so 6 days) iv put in a LOT of petrol (I stopped counting at £175 which is quickly making me fall out of love with it.
I knew it would be thirsty but this is killing me as its my everyday car to get to work (around 4 miles each way) I'm almost spending what I'm earning.
However enough of me gibbering on, basically I'm wondering what woyld be the cheapest engine to source and replace in the place of a v8 we recently discovered we've got a little one kn the way so the boss is cutting my play time funds, so in order for me to keep the disco I need to make it family friendly, which means losing the v8 fuel bills :(
Iv heard the BMW diesel engines can be put into range rover classics and p38's but would i have much trouble wedging it in the disco? Also correct me if I'm wrong but i believe the 2.5 Vauxhall omegas have the BMW power plant also? Any other suggestions? HELP

dunno bout bmw into classics. A 200tdi or 300 tdi into a d1 will be ok. Or you could buy one with it already in.

had one.... Got nicked. :'( Also got a 8 month old boxer, as you can imagine he's too bouncy to be cramping in a 3 door corsa with a baby seat and two adults.

If you want to keep yours I would suggest a 2nd hand single point LPG kit from Ebay, fit most of it yourself then get a qualified fitter to check the system finish it off and give you a certificate for insurance. Cheaper and easier than buying a tdi engine and fitting it, nearly half price fuel, you make your cash back real quickly and you still get to keep that lovely V8 ;).

But the easiest thing to do would be to just sell it and buy a Tdi :D

thats what i wanted to say but i had to rush out. great minds think alike

Won't get anywhere near what it owes me plus I like the colour etc.... and its a 3 door, I have contemplated it, and with a baby on the way if I sell it and have the cash sat there the missus will find a pram that "we HAVE to get"

Its been discussed on here before , the Tdi replacing the V8 that is . A good search rummage will find you that . I have no idea about the BMW though - if you look in the back of the magazines thee are several companies that advertise all sorts of conversion kits . A phone call or e mail to one of them will most like be the quickest way to find out .

You never get back the money you spend on stuff like this, thats just a fact im afraid. I would seriously look into the option of changing it, the cost of the conversion, extra parts, labour, setting up e.t.c. added to the current value of yours could allow you to get a real nice 3 door later model in a nice colour...

Im not saying don't but its not a 5 minute job (as im sure your aware), I have seen so many people go down this route on similar vehicles and regret it afterwards...

Yup , those half finished projects just pile up....and motors with no engine taking up space with moss growing on them DO NOT win any points with the other half .

It's not the getting my money back that bothers me its throwing more money at another one! Plus iv worked and worked at the list of things to do on this one its nearly all done if I get another one I'm basically taking on someone else's to do list plus there's no guarantee what has been done has been done right. If that makes sense.
The space thing isn't a issue as it'll be up at my mates farm

Found one off a carb'd v8? What would I need to make that work? Mines a injected one

I seen that one this morning on ebay too, was gonna post a link for you to it till I saw it was for carbs, I would get one thats off an V8 efi like yours otherwise its just over complicating things, they do come up quite often and at good prices just I saw nothing on ebay today that would suit yours.

That way you get to keep yours which you know has been fixed to your satisfaction and has a small to do list left rather than playing the Disco roulette game!

I don't understand why you don't look for an mot-failed TDi 300. Then you would have all the bits you need to convert your current car to diesel and when you're done, flog off all the surplus bits.
