...possibly: what's the point of fixing Defender mudguards to the underside of the rear cross member? Surely you'd fix them as close to the rear wheels as possible, thereby protecting a good portion of the rear section and any trailing load. It doesn't make sense :doh:

I like the aesthetics of the mud-flaps on the back but think their design is more for spray etc.

I'm hoping to find somewhere to get some some sort of flimsy black plastic I can cut to make some small inner wheel arch extensions over the front outrigger/footwells in the front and rear crossmember in the back.

I find these classic mud traps rather annoying, and on mine I could really do without them rotting too fast!

Fitted to rear xmember will stop the mud from firing out the back and messing up the rear of the vehicle. I cannot see any probs with fitting nearer the wheel but I think it is more about suitable places to attach them?

.........and I have boxed in my rear outer xmembers to avoid the mudtrap.

Any pics of the boxing in? I'd be very interested to see that as replacing the xmember again isn't too appealing.
