1987 LR 90 rear mudflaps

Hi

I am looking to rear flaps and would like the original Land Rover ones as here https://www.lrparts.net/lrc1375rear...ear-mudflap-set-set-of-two-rear-mudflaps.html

I believe they attach to the underside of the slanting part of the rear cross member but I have looked at mine and I can’t see how I would get to the back of the holes to attach a nut on any fixing bolt.

I have searched the web and also YouTube but found nothing to help. Surely it isn’t that complicated as most people have mud flaps? Or am I missing something really simple? I wondered whether a riv nut in the hole would work best and mean I didn’t need the special kit?

Defender rear mud flap brackets [find on flea bay, galve ones available ] are fitted using Rivnuts. An insert goes in the hole and spreads to expand and hold when nut done up.

Yup. Rivnut all the way. I did bolt a set on once but was very hard to get the bolts or nuts in the right place through the end of the crossmember.

I replaced the brackets on mine last year with stainless steel brackets, about £50 for a set of fronts and rears. The old brackets were attached to the cross member with steel threaded inserts which were corroded beyond use, I punched them out and drilled the square holes they were in, to round and used ally rivnuts. The set in your link has rivnuts included, they are in the bottom right of the pic in the link.

Rivnuts are the way to go .. I use them all over the place.
Stainless nuts are good unless you are going into alluminium, then alloy ones are best.

If you are going to do that you need the correct tool to fit them. It can be done with a bolt and some nuts but it is much easier with the right tool, similar to a large riveter. Unfortunately I cannot help with this as the cheap one I bought is terrible and stripped all its adjusting threads out on the first use. I have since welded it together so it still works but it has no adjustment so it not ideal.

You can use a nut/washer and bolt, to set a rivnut.

The alloy rivnuts set much easier than the steel ones, there are also many qualities of rivnuts.

I use the alloy M8 ones quite a bit at work, then do the bolts up with a 3/8 impact!
So long as you grease the bolts they will be just fine.

Forgot to say the stainless flap brackets are pretty good, gaudy as hell but at least that bit cannot rot!

Thanks. Yes stainless steel probably best as alloy would cause issues against steel.

I’ve been looking at these and other diy methods of riveting but a proper interchangeable gun seems better as it Will do multiple sizes.

The lever guns are the best, but I have heard many time the cheapies are crap and break the mandrels.
But they may last with the alloy rivnuts as they are easier to set, ie less load on the tool.

that seems to be the case with all rivet tools whether pop or rivnut. I am on my second pop rivet tool as the first broke and I bought a third to do larger rivets as the tension on the smaller tool was too hard on my hands.

Ebay Eclipse or Tucker rivet guns
I have had my Eclipse lever gun for many years, also Eclipse rivnut tool, none have given me any issues.
