But which one?

My money's on the alternator right now.

What ISN'T obvious from the video is just how much the tensioner is 'bouncing' - suggesting that one of the pulleys is 'binding' and releasing, which is in keeping with the noise.

I will be removing the belt for confirmation in due course (ie when I can be bothered!) but for now - any thoughts?

As suspected - got the belt off and the alternator bearings are as rough as a badger's arse... new one arriving tomorrow.

Quick Q - how much 'play', if any, should there be in the idler pulley? The bearing is ever so slightly noisy (no more so than, say, a pram wheel, for example) and it has just the TINIEST amount of movement in it. Are those things meant to be solid? Sound like it needs replacing?

Air con tensioner pulley is flopping all over the place, and is clearly knackered - but since the ac doesn't work anyway, I'm going to leave the belt off that for now.

The new tensioner pulley and idler pulley I put on my Tranny had absolutely no play and were slightly sticky, as in full of grease, to turn.
The old ones only had slight play but the idler pulley made a noise like a Yankee police siren:eek:

Having removed alternator and idler, it seems clear that Salisbury's finest mud / grinding paste is the culprit... the alternator spindle is full of it and so is the idler!!!

Idler pulley arrived today, along with new battery (Alphaline, thanks for the recommend!) - fitted new alternator too, and noises now back to normal. I could swear my engine vibes have died down a little too...

Alphaline battery is cracking - turns it over at light speed and it fires straight up, hot or cold.

As an aside on the engine vibes... I noticed, while the belts were off, that I could move the inner portion of the crank damper by levering it with a screwdriver - and it moved quite a long way with not that much force... May not be falling apart, but I'm willing to bet that's the source of my engine vibe issues... Just need a spare £250 to waste now testing the theory out...
