Me again, as if you haven’t heard enough from me lately there is more to come,

Ok so whilst sitting in the car on the drive trying to sort out the EAS, I notice my temperature go sky high, and it has lost some water. The car had a new radiator not so long ago (well 7 months ago, but it has maybe only done 200 miles if that) I’m doing a whole over haul of the car as it needs it, and a lot of stuff probably hasn’t been changed ever!

It’s 95 diesel (that may help?) My worry of course is the head has gone or even worse!! There were no signs of water ****ing out but there are no signs of the creamy stuff in the engine oil. Where would it have gone??

Please can you give me your thoughts on what to check, change, and where you would start? I haven’t got a pressure tester and the car is not MOTED or Taxed so I cant whip it to a local garage.

Many thanks in advance

If the radiator that you fitted does not have a central baffle forcing the hot water down into it, or if the baffle has broken off, then you will get no cooling effect.
The water pumps in the diesels had plastic impellers that can either come loose from their shaft or even break up in situ.
The viscous fans do fail. Sitting stationary with the temperature rising it should have been roaring. The rough and ready test is to see if it will shred a rolled up newspaper when the engine is hot.

I have no idea about this baffle in the rad, is there anyway I can check it out? I have read about the water pump and I was going to buy one as well as the thermostat just for the sake of knowing that has been done. As for the fan I don't think it had even come on, I'm going to chuck 12v at it later and see if it even works.... So you think I should jab a newspaper into it?

Have any pipes collapsed, is air in system

Haven't seen any pipes collapsed... and I fairly sure there is air in the system, what's your thoughts??

Using a marble....

Remove Rad.....turn upside down.....put marble into one of the hose inputs...tilt rad.....if marble falls out the other side - baffle missing of fecked.....

Oh... who would of thought that?? nice work thanks.

Why can't anything just be straight forward?? so that's one test I can do to eliminate a problem anything else I can do to eliminate any other possible problems?

Who'd have thought of that? Me :)

Also, you can use a £12 USB snake camera off ebay as per this one:
Radiator baffle test - using endoscope and torch. - YouTube

It is quite common. Heard of loads of rads like this. The garage that fitted mine bought it in good faith from a really well known supplier. I ended up getting my money back and the replacement from Island 4x4 was spot on. (The original wasn't from Island 4x4 to be clear)

Nik

P.S. Yes, I do miss it.... Hyundai's are so boring! :)

It should have a belt driven fan!..
The electric ones are for the ac and as standerd nothing to do with engine cooling
however there is a way of wireing them to work as cooling fans but not recommended unless you've determind the root of your problem is down to the belt fans clutch aka viscous fan

+1, the newspaper test is for the engine driven viscous fan. An overheat at idle on a diesel is more likely to be the water pump IMO.

That could come in handy for a world of different things;):D:D

I'm hoping that is not the case, and I did get mine from island 4x4 (well the guy at the garage did I found the receipt) so fingers crossed

Aye, getting to where you want to go without carying 10 kilo's of diagnostics and worrying about what is going to go wrong must be terribly boring:rolleyes:

Well... maybe I might give it a miss then lol See I know nothing, this is just one massive learning curve for me.

You have not let me down yet Datatek 100% so far, even if I was adamant about the ECU lol just glad I bought that water pump now!

Udate,

Ok, so the water pump had some play in it and the O ring had started to perish, the thermostat was in poor condition (stuggling to open) and the O ring was britle. And The O rings you mentioned in the Heater matrix had both snapped in half :jaw:

So over the weekend I have done the height sensor and all of the above with the EXCEPTION of getting the pipes from the heater matrix back together.... I have tried to avoid cutting that bit of ducting.. but I am sort of considering it, IF I do what is the best way to put it back together?

No need to cut, look in the how to section, if you must, duct tape

I have followed the how to.... I would of been lost with out it to be honest a BIG thank you!!

I'm just really struggling to get them in place and then to tighten it up? I have thought about getting a longer bolt so I can get it into the clamp before putting pipes in place, do you think that would work.. I can just about get my hands into do the pipes, I don’t think I could get some duck tape on it as well... big hands - small brain

If you have refitted them correctly they should be held reasonably well. Make sure you twist them either way until the locating peg engages. Tightening them before they are properly engaged is fatal, they will leak.

Having an extra pair of hands at pipes in engine bay makes it easier but not essential, existing bolt is plenty long enough.
Remember the wriggling/re-tighten for success first time, please don't over tighten or it can get painful

Well what a day... this so far has been the worst job for me by far! i lost it in the end cut the ducting and then i could see the problem, so much easier FOR ME... the O rings weren't going in I had located it in the hole, but it was just not deep enough (or did she say that last night?) anyway, I took the pipe off in the engnie bay and tapped it and in she went:)
So now just to put the car back together happy day's

You did grease them up i hope if you have nicked one all is for nought. :)
