I've just received my Snorkel from First Four. The kit is a SS581HF which is listed on the Safari website as the right one for the TD5 (1999 onward) AND the TD4.

On the FF website, it shows the snorkel as the type that uses the wing to seal the unit, and that's what I've got in the kit. There's no pipework, just a rubber gasket and all the fixings.

They list this as P/N: FF3027 and is shown here:

However, on Paddock they have a TD5 snorkel listed with their P/N DA3027 but with a different diagram, showing pipework that goes through the wing, and is sealed by a rubber hose, akin to the way the TDI snorkel fits.

The thing is, this kit is listed on the Safari website as for both TD5 and Puma engines, yet both the sellers I've just listed sell a separate, and more expensive snorkel for the Puma engine.

Ofcourse I could go and look at my Landy and see what's behind the air intake panel, but it's in the garage now, and my other car is parked infront of it.

So my question is, why the difference, and which one should be right, for those that have fitted it.

I've been scratching my head and swearing a lot over the last 24 hours as I have exactly the same problem. Considering the challenges Safari face from the inferior copies on the market they really need to sort thetheir sh!t out. I've found exactly the same issues but now they have even removed the Guides section from their website they mention in the manual. They also refer all questions to their dealers in the UK. Poor form really.

I've used their template on the product they suggest for my 2001 TD5 and found one of the mounting holes drilled falls in line with the rigid internal air duct. It looks almost impossible to get a nut on that bolt as naturally the air ducting must be secured before you fit the Snorkel. Earlier models did indeed have additional tubing and a connector to vary the internal ducting. There is a Youtube video on prepping a Defender for wading that shows this installation and the mounting holes are in what appears to be different positions. They put a waiver on the instructions saying they wont be responsible for template problems.

If they have somehow cocked it up they will be getting a bill. Hopefully Britpart or Arbil will be able to explain what is going on. Not good enough for a company suggesting they are selling the market leading product.

I had exactly the same problem, but have managed to fit the later model Safari Snorkel to my TD5... equally un-impressed with the service/product... The Safari fitted to my 200Tdi was bombproof - hence my choice for my TD5...

It was a while ago now, but I do remember it being a pig to fit, and much swearing and dislocating of wrists to get the hidden nut on, and squeezing another nut between the inside of the panel and the existing air duct. I seem to remember taping the nut to my spanner and poking it up behind the inner wheel arch!

A good deal of silicone was used to ensure a seal, and all the nuts and bolts eventually tightened....

My advice would be to exchange for the 300TDi snorkel, which connects directly to the flexible hose - so trashing the need to keep the infernal land rover plastic air duct behind the wing... thus leaving space for easy installation on the fixing nuts.

I to had this. The snorkel turned up and was for the puma. Took a look and fitted it with no problems. Sealed it all up with sealant and had no problems. One of the fixing nuts is a bastid though.

Following this I just checked the thread - How deep have you taken your defender - and realise what DJ X's avatar photo is!! This gives me a bit more confidence with my snorkel outfit... but I presume you have gone the whole hog on the wading kit - raised breathers etc... have to relocated your ECU too?

Ecu is still under the seat. I have a wading kit and safari snorkel and all is well with the Landy. Both footwells did start to fill up from the heater vents though so I have made a cover for the wing top vent for my next wading trip.

Fitting it was an absolute c**t of a job, due to the one sodding nut that you have to hold with your arm right up the wing.

I can see why from a business perspective Safari have consolidated their products to have less options, and have multiple fitments, but the fact is the old style tube fitment was better and easier to seal.

Having said that, I silicon b*****dised all the seals to make sure, and the Defender has had a severe dunking with no signs of water in the inlet path atall. So it does work, it's just a b*****d of a job.
