TD5 air con compressor pulley

On the autoroute the other day, the pulley wheel in front of the air con compressor started smoking and screeching. I pulled over immediately and was 'airlifted' off to a garage.
Are my worst fears to come true that the new pulley wheel is attached to compressor in one unit:eek: or is there a possibility of changing the pulley wheel and possibly bearing(probably what overheated) without coughing up the other 500+ squids for the attached compressor?
Year 2000 TD5.

TD5's are available without aircon so at a guess the cheapest solution to your problem would be to either get an idler pulley if your disco has ace or if it doesn't you could simply get just a non aircon belt and miss out the aircon pulley. Alternatively get a secondhand aircon compressor from ebay.

Yes, If one is available the idler pulley would replace the aircon pulley. I would expect the entire compressor to need removing in order to fit an idler pulley.
 
I've just done a quick check. Idler pulleys are available for both ACE and aircon on TD5's. the pulleys are around £30 each. Obviously as your ACE is working ok you just need the aircon idler.
 
OK...theoretically that should make the air con operable?....but I did read on the net somewhere today that the air con pulley is not dismountable(theoretically\) although I came across an instance of someone who used a three legged puller to force the pulley wheel off to get at the (sealed?)circlip behind, then replaced the pulley wheel with I don't know what....that's more for the in-depth heavy enthusiast and don't know if my French mechanic is that deeply knowlegable.

I've just done a quick search on ebay for you. It might be worth giving these peeps a ring for a bit more info. I've never used em. This extract is from the item description.

Suitable for the following Land Rover models:

  • Defender 1998 - 2006 TD5 with or without Air Conditioning
  • Discovery 1998 - 2004 TD5 without Air Conditioning and without ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement)
On some engines there are 2 idler pulleys, depending if the vehicle has air conditioning and/or ACE, this is the lower right of the 2 idler pulleys.

A quality replacement part, equivalent to Land Rover part number: ERR6658


Land Rover Defender TD5 Drive Belt Idler Pulley on eBay (end time 16-Sep-10 20:02:51 BST)

They seen to know about the pulleys so it may be worth asking them for some help/advice.
 
Thank you very much once again Ratty. I have made a desktop shortcut to your ebay item and info and will ring them tomorrow.
Must go to bed now as when I took the dogs for a walk across the field earlier, I just happened to have been bitten by a viper. No real damage done as the little fecker only sank it's fangs in and didn't deposit any venom, (doctor said I was very lucky) but two hours down the hospital emergency has left me knackered.

Sounds like you had a lucky escape. I was picking up and playing with a slow worm once when I was a kid. Then the farmer pointed out the V on the back of it's head.:eek::eek::eek:
