Okay, 2003 Discovery 2 Td5 with original factory-fitted air con (compressor LR part number is JPB101330, Denso type 10PA17C).

Okay, air con stopped working a few weeks ago (has been fine since day 1 - 17 years ago) - not blowing cold air anymore and clutch not engaging.

I have a good theoretical understanding of refrigeration (air con), but no practical experience with it.

Ex-mechanic had a good look for me and confirmed the system was fully-charged with gas and said the coil has failed - need a new coil. Said I should see if I can replace both the coil and the clutch (new or recon clutch) - can do this in situ (no need to remove the compressor), so don't need to remove the compressor or de-gas the system.

Had a quick look for a coil and clutch (and may as well put a new bearing in the pulley) - no luck so far though.

Has anyone changed the coil and clutch before? .

Any tips for removal / reinstalling?

Any thoughts on where I can pick-up a coil / clutch / bearing?

Keen to move onto this soon as the weather is bound to heat up soonish!

The serpentine belt is the original Continental belt and looks in good nick, but may replace it while I'm at it with a new Gates belt I have, and a new tensioner pulley (nothing wrong, but just some preventative maintenance). Here is a pic (disconnected power to compressor at plug):

Well, that's good to hear you confirm that. Did not want to contemplate buying a compressor, evaporator, drier, de-gassing and re-gassing! $$$s!!!!!

Now the problem is finding someone/somewhere local (Melbourne, Aust) or online where I can get a suitable clutch and coil - new, recon/checked or even used/checked. The few people I have contacted said I need to buy a new compressor...

No. I put a Gates belt on and it squealed on starting and stopping the engine. Swapped it for a genuine Contitech and no noise since. The outer edge was smooth on the Gates and not gripping properly on the pulleys running on that part.

Ended up getting a Gates because I just couldn't find a Contitech belt. I have Continental tyres on the other vehicle, but no luck finding Continental Contitech belt over here for some reason! Having said that, the original Contitech belt still looks good as gold!

Once compressor is changed run what you brung and keep the spare for a spare!
I replaced a whole compressor with one off the bay. still running fine. Maybe I woz lucky!

When swapping I used clamps to ensure I lost very little refrigerant. Can top it up with the bottle from Halfrauds over here!

The two a/c lines coming off the top of the compressor I have are aluminium on mine - nothing to clamp; thought that would be hard in any case, especially on a high-pressure side hose? Yeah, minimum $99 from what I've seen over here for a re-gas - no DIY re-gassing!

Also, the compressor prices are very high over here (and shipping from the UK isn't cheap for such a heavy item) - not much spare cash at the moment so prefer to save and just get the clutch/coil/(new bearing for pulley while I'm at it).

Will just have to keep looking around - sierrafery said the same a/c compressor (Denso 10PA17C) is used on John Deere tractors. Just wondering if these have different clutches/coils on different vehicles - sure the pulley would vary (7 ridges). Will ring around and see how I go - they all want to just sell the compressor for obvious reasons! Will have to be careful buying online as I want to be sure I get a clutch and coil that fit!

Thinking about it, I did the job on a Disco 1 300tdi. But there must be flexible pipes somewhere, even if they are not right next to the compressor.
Feel for you with trying to source the parts.

Yeah aluminium pipes at the compressor, suspect you're right and there are hoses elsewhere, but haven't noticed any - then again, I'm not always very observant the first time around!

Okay, tried calling five likely clutch/coil supplier options locally (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) - Denso 10PA17C compressor (Land Rover Part # JPB101330) - no luck, said they only sell/install new compressors (c. AUD 1000 +). Online as per sierrafery suggestion with "10PA17C" and "RE52508" - early promising option is ebay!

Here's what ebay seller (China-based) said:

AC clutch kit includes clutch, pulley, hub, coil and bearing. Total price is USD 110 (AUD 161 / GBP 85) which includes DHL/EMS shipping cost to Australia.

Complete compressor with clutch total price is USD 230 (AUD 338 / GBP 178) which includes DHL/EMS shipping cost to Australia.

Link to the ebay ad I came across:

Link they gave to the compressor that the clutch kit fits (includes reference to LR Part No. JPB101330):

Does this look right? Will have a further look, but so far ebay looks the goods if I'm trying to find a clutch (kit)?

Any thoughts?

All sits on the front of the compressor.

My clutch fell off.

Was refitted at same time as steering box

I THINK it is now bolted permanently on.

Anyone done this before? If I go ahead and buy this clutch kit on ebay (USD 110 delivered), then, given I'll be doing this with the compressor still connected, I guess it's just a case of:
  • remove serpentine belt
  • remove central nut from pulley (spanner and shock it with a hammer?)
  • knock pulley off - hammer and piece of wood knocking it from behind whilst turning the pulley to ease it off?
  • pull everything off
  • put the new coil on (might have to splice wires?)
  • (replace bearing in pulley or leave as is with original bearing - might need access to a bearing press?)
  • put pulley and clutch on
  • check shims (washers)
  • check clutch clearance with feeler gauge
  • tighten the front bolt again (use blue thread seal?)
  • replace serpentine belt
  • test
Any steps missing here or any potential pitfalls to look out for? Any precautions to take?

Will I need a clutch puller?

Looking at the front of the clutch (picture was attached) it looks like there may have been a cover that has come off?

I believe I'll need a pair of circlip pliers?

Should I buy a clutch-puller or try knocking the pulley off with a hammer and piece of wood?

I'm intrigued by post #14 which includes
I THINK it is now bolted permanently on.
I did wonder, what with it being hot where you are an all, it might not just be simpler to have the aircon connected permanently, by bolting one disc to the other as if the clutch was permanently engaged. This would give you time to source bits etc. I'd a thought 3 smallish bolts would do it?
What does anyone else think?

Ah, not really that hot yet, and do have another vehicle I regularly use. Widespread and ferocious drought and wind-fuelled bushfires further north in NSW and QLD and very hot record-breaking weather - #ClimateCrisis! Melbourne okay for now and windows/sunroof make it pleasant enough. Guess it would work though - temporary, always on ac?

Have found the parts (see previous post) - hit with several unexpected large non-Disco related bills though and just waiting to have a bit of surplus cash to make the ebay purchase - clutch/coil/pulley.

Was just wondering if someone had changed their ac clutch and coil and could hopefully critique the procedure I outlined in previous post?

They do say that, admittedly above about 30 mph, driving around with Ac on is more economical than with a window open. Honestly doubt you'd notice it.
Hope you sort it soon and someone pops on to critique waht you put up.
Best of luck.
