Took head to bloke who did machining for me he checked it and two things first head is 2 thou out across the length and he told me the liners in 2 and 4 had one edge raised by just over a thou when he took the block in first time and it was fine when pressure tested so armed with that and the fact there was no steam cleaning evidence I am going to rebuild and if it fails then whip when lot out and have new liners preferably when it is warmer and lighter

very sorry Sandy

You might be better getting a different pair of heads - there are loads of 10-bolts on ebay for around 100 pounds a pair - then just get them lightly skimmed.

Make sure you refit with composite gaskets and for god's sake get some new bolts - the originals may be fatigued.

Get a tiny wire brush as well to clear out the oil galleries(often overlooked) - you may as well fit a new camshaft while you are at it - Kent H180 is the best with an auto box.

Best of luck old boy

Right gents feedback time put the heads back on yesterday all running sweet took her out for a test drive ran no more than 2000 rpm to let it all bed in when suddenly a misfire and now what seems to be a cylinder not running and a sort of whump noise from the plenum my original thought was a bit of crap from the old gasket fouling one of the valves somehow anyway going to do a compression test this afternoon but just wondered if anyone had any ideas to save time - I know the match is the way to go :) I am not going to let this engine beat me

Havent done anything today too bloody miserable weather not me anyway its odd that the popping in the plenum disappears when I take either no 4 or no 6 plug lead off cant get my head round why either one makes a difference as if the gasket had failed it wouldnt give a popping in the plenum would it
