My mates just bought a p38 1997 4.6 and when stripping the head to do the head gasket found this (see pic)

The liner is level around the majority of the top but you can feel a slight edge on the side by the water channel, It does not appear to have slipped as a whole.

The most worrying part is the edge/deformity where the liner sits against the block by the water channel (see middle of picture what appears to be a crack?)

Have any of you guys come across this before?

Both, liners don't slip unless block is cracked.

If the liner had slipped wouldn't there be a lip around the entire liner and not just in the one area?

I've seen liners drop before and that is obvious, not too sure if this is ok or the engines shot?

What i meant was, you will not get a slipped liner unless the block is cracked. Liners don't slip until the block cracks and lets go of them. You need to pressure test the block. If anything comes out from that position the block is cracked. Something has caused the apparent voids. Maybe just hot gas leaking from the fire ring meeting a bit of coolant from the water jacket. Block face looks pretty poor. Normally that area would be covered. Without a pressure test you don't know.
