hi all, just need a bit of advice. Can lay my hands on an unlimited supply of waste veggie oil from a local chinese restaurant. Have seen previous threads and various sites on the web about making bio diesel and running motors.

I have a May 1995 P38, with a bmw 2.5 dt engine and would like to try to run it on bio. Anyone out there doing it, any problems and just how do you process the oil, on a diy basis????

are you anywhere near Sheffield??
I run my p38 on bio and dino mix and it runs ok!
Can show you how to make the stuff in return for some oil;)

Can I run 'Rory' on bio? He's a 2000 2.5 auto ES model Disco.

I sincerely hope he can cos the b*****d has just cost me £2.5k for a gearbox sort out. (Think the previous owner knew about the problem and sold it on to unsuspecting female, me!)

help!

sorry everlatesparky, should have said that i am in n.ireland. If the process is not too complicated, any chance of sharing the "secret recipe" to bio diesel????

Hhmmmmm
Looked at the schnews site method......no mention of the safety side of the process...their method is ok but considor he following.

oil needs to be heated to at least 200f to drive off any water left in the oil or all you will make is soap...and lots of it!

Your catalyst is sodium methoxide...caustic soda mixed with methanol (a very good neuro toxin that will kill you by breathing in fumes or getting it on your skin).

Old oil is messy.Period! you will soon fall foul of the missus when you bring home hundreds of litres of whiffy oil. Trust me on this one!

Still interested???

Still need oil if anyone has a source.
I pay a small amount per litre in cash for good oil. Price depends on how used the oil is.

yes if the fuel is made properly.
Try a 50% mix at first to see how the motor takes to it.
ALWAYS carry a spare fuel filter with you. Its rarely the fuel that causes a blockage but bio-diesel is a very good cleaner and will shift all the muck thats stuck on the inside of your tank and fuel lines

on the tv program 'chop shop' they ran a 4x4 on WVO, they only filtered it through fine mesh, no additives just gravity overnight. they did however have to heat the oil to 75 f to get it to run. don't know why or how but it is well documented on the net!

Maybe on an older diesel that isnt direct injection cause these will tolorate thicker fuel...wouldnt fancy it in a modern motor.
Oh heating the oil thins it so pumps can handle it better. Usually use 2 tanks for this system...1 for normal diesel and 1 with a heater in it tothin the waste oil.

you need to have a good quality pump and a forgiving engine with very little electronic engine management - you also need to consider blanking your egr valve (now here's me whose said not to all over the place but the exhaust from burning wvo or svo is very sticky and you don't want that recirculating... ) I used to get up to 90%svo in the summer just straight in the tank on my Estima.. then the price of veg went up to early as much as petrol and I couldn't get wvo so got a proper car with lpg

Hi

Am also considering the same, but Im happy to run 50% WVO (well filtered) Anyone used this combo, how did it go ?

Dont want to get too technical !!;)
