Hi everybody - it has been a little while since I was last on the site!

A lot of water, (and a fair number of vehicles), have passed under the bridge since then.

I acquired a very nice 2007 Range Rover TDV8 a couple of years ago and was very impressed with the vehicle - despite a number of issues I had to sort out . . .

The Rangey would run the battery down within a few hours if it was locked with the central locking - but the Rangey would retain its charge for several days if I didn't lock it - a replacement battery sorted that!

Some time later I experienced the 'three amigos' with the Rangey going into limp mode several seconds, (or sometimes a couple of minutes), from driving off my drive.

I was then confronted with every error known to mankind, (Suspension, hill assist, etc . . .), but this simply turned out to be a problem with the fuel filter.

I had a lovely drive down to Devon, (to pick up a CLK320), with this vehicle and a very long trailer which I will always remember with a smile!

Anyway, I digress, that Rangey went, some time ago, but I still have a desire to own another TDV8 and I have the opportunity to take a very big gamble on a 'spares/repairs' 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 which has two faults as follows: -

Oil/fuel leak around one of the injectors - that is as much detail as the owner can, (or is prepared), to give me.

He also states that the Rangey drives fine but is a little 'jerky' when you put your foot down - the owner states he uses the vehicle most days for short trips?

The second fault is with the electric parking brake - again no further details.

I have to admit that I am both intrigued, (and somewhat allured), by this vehicle as it is the later L322 model, (approximately 120k), with all the toys and keyless entry, etc, and the current price is less than a second hand mountain bike I am hoping to purchase later this week!

So do I bite the bullet or simply walk away?

The main deciding factor will be the test drive just to see if the engine is trying to tell me something but if it appears to be reasonably happy I would be hoping to drive it home - a mere 125 miles or so!

I am well used to adventures, (it all started with the P38 ten years ago!), and I purchased a Porsche, (approximately 35 miles north of Edinburgh), last year and drove that home - only to run out of steam, literally, when the water pump failed just outside Doncaster and both the Porsche and I arrived home on the back of a recovery vehicle!

I know there is no definitive answer to my plight but I just wondered if anybody has experienced fuel leaks on/in/around the injectors?

I am presuming that it could be a leak in the fuel supply or return lines or even from the injector itself?

But not sure if the TDV8 suffers any problems with the injector clamps that hold the injectors against the cylinder heads - such as the 'black death' problem with the Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel engines that they fitted to the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Sincere apologies for the essay but I promise to provide you with many more tales - should I decide to take, (yet), another gamble!

L322 or RRS? They are different
Kermit,

Apologies for any confusion it is the Range Rover Sport model and not the original Range Rover model.

As previously stated it is located a fair distance away so it could be a bit ofva drive for nothing - but then again . . . !

The fact it says oil/fuel says to me injector blow by rather than spill pipe leak. I don't know that engine but the replacement injector might need coding to the ECM.

Electronic park brake is the design of the devil. Unless serviced regularly they fail. Should be able to strip and grease and it'll be fine unless the plastic gears are stripped.

Really appreciate your comments thank you all.

I am going to take a closer look and try and form a rational opinion from what I see and how it drives.

If the condition is as good as the pictures then it may be worth a gamble as the price is peanuts and I always have this desire to use my tools from time to time.

And I now have a new double garage and workshop too . . . .

But fear not as I am taking a good friend along with me just to keep me on the straight and narrow and provide an, unbiased, extra pair of eyes and he will be the one wearing the sensible hat !

In true 'Streets of San Fransisco' fashion -

The Epilogue!

Popped over this afternoon and cast an eye over the vehicle and, (at first glance), it appeared to be an absolute steal at the extremely low price.

Exterior bodywork good with no dings and just a couple of light scratches.

Interior clean and relatively tidy but with expected tear along driver seat cushion.

All the toys and most things, (that I had time to check), appeared to work fine.

The owner then explained the problems in more detail: -

1/. The Injector leak - upon inspection this appeared to be a leak at the rear left hand bank fuel feed line that feeds the far left Injector- it was the connector between the supply rail and the Injector feed pipe - a very easy fix.

2/. There was a second oil leak however - from the stability control hydraulic reservoir - which was empty. The leak was around the front nearside wheel arch. Again this fault did not cause me too much concern.

3/. The jerking!

The owner started the engine - it sounded sweet with no undo knocks, bangs, whines or rattles. No smoke, (of any colour), from the exhausts. Coolant expansion reservoir clean and fluid clear and not pressurised . Oil filler cap removed - no smoke, clean cam, no evidence of emulsification.

So far so good - I was almost ready to take it off his hands.

The owner said he would drive first to try and demonstrate the 'jerking' for me and we, literally, roared off his driveway and down the street - absolutely no 'mechanical sympathy' displayed.

The engine remained faultless so the owner continued to 'thrash' the engine!

All of a sudden there was a bit if a bang followed by a very strange smell and clouds of white smoke emanating from the rear nearside exhaust!

We stopped and took a look under yhe bonnet - nothing looked amis and the engine was still idling happily.

I decided to drive it back to the owners house and the engine still appeared fine, (but now lacking in power), and I left plumes of white smoke in my wake!

Once back I plugged in my iCarsoft just to take a quick look but saw nothing of any great concern - even though I now had a strong suspicion that the owner had blown his nearside turbo!!!

After offering our hearty condolences we left the scene and headed home!

So the search continues!

If I had a trailer and the vehicle had not been far from my home address I would have made a very low ball offer and taken it for a winter project!

I need to keep up my reputation of being a 'glutton for punishment'!

I have never been 'stung' with a vehicle purchase, (but there's still time of course), but it was a surreal experience as the owner seemed intent on destroying the engine.

How very strange!

Right back to the classifieds methinks.

I have had issues with leak off pipes leaking on the 2.7 v6, took me ages to find the bloody thing, and was not convinced when I had found the leak!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my injector return, which was cured with a new O ring
Easy fix once the covers came off.

Wlowde,

Glad that yours was an easy fix.

I walked away from this particular RRS - not because of the minor oil leak but because the owners appeared to destroy the left hand turbo whilst driving it to demonstrate a bit of judder!!!!!

I have since acquired a similar RRS which has now covered in excess of 600 miles, (durng the past few weeks), and so far so good.

But I di have an auto transmission oil leak on my Porsche Boxster S which is proving elusive to find . . . . . !

Mark,

Unfortunately that may well be the case as the leak appears to be coming from the bell housing where the engine-gearbox connect together!

Better stop this Boxster thread in its tracks!

Take care.
Oh noooo, did this series of engine have the ims bearing issues like the 996?

hmm lucky escape ,could be a turbo
Im always checking the tax on the vehicles as now its getting too expensive ,even my 03 on the cheaper rate of £365 is beginning to bite .
I know if i own a rr and quibble the cost of tax etc ,i dont deserve to drive one BUT the gf is in control of the outgoings and it miffs her as her car is only £35.00 a year .
I know I know the rr is a completely different level of refinement but i get enough ear ache at my rr tax cost
