I see from numerous threads that seem to contradict each other depending on your vehicle around the general suitability of K&N filters for the Disco 1.
Can I please ask someone who has one how they have found it, I'm avoiding the BPart one as very few people (including my local dude) has anything good to say about them.

As it;s service time coming up soon (152k) I wondered should I stick with OEM or not.

Cheers from perpetually cloudy Cork.

K&N will do sod all..... in a standard engine other than allow induction noise, they are a performance item to allow more air therefore fuel in to the intake and to allow that will need a different cam profile and bigger inlet valves, the you need to get rid of the extra burnt gases so the exhaust will need sorting.

Been there and done that in my 2 litre Ford Pinto engine and a K&N gave me 1 BHP extra that's after a cam and head change, I got more by removing the Kenlow fan 5 BHP.

With that expencive tuining it increased the BHP from the standard 96 to 145 + a big increase in torque so was well worth having back in the early 80s. :D

Hi Discool,

That seems liek a fair comment, I have the large Allisport intercooler which did make a big difference so thought that this may compliment it. If it's going to do Feck all I'll leave it an stick to the normal stuff. 40quid is a lot of Euro these days!

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris, there is little or no performance gain in allowing more air into the engine, if you don't adjust the fuelling.

As you have an auto it will have a MAF and electronic control of the engine which means a re-map would be required to bring out the full benefits of your intercooler as well as the K&N.

Your choice.......................................

Good advice again, I think I'll stay OEM for the moment. I won;t try to break what's not fixed.
Thank you! Where are you in Central France BTW?

To be honest when you think about the price of normal filters from the likes of Paddocks, a K&N makes little sense.

We're in the Creuse, Limousin, just south of the centre of France - and it's been about 35° today!!!!

I fitted a K&N and can confirm it hasnt made any difference to anything I can notice although as discool says the induction noise is a little louder.

I didnt think it would make much if any difference when I bought it it was just that it has a lifetime guarantee so thought buy once as opposed to buying a new one every year, tbh even though I got it cheap it would still prob work out cheaper buying a new one every year.

Theres also mention of the filters oil messing with the MAF sensor or something but Ive been good for nearly 4 years now, touch wood.

Had a K&N panel filter fitted for the past 5 years, no real difference in performance, but considering the amount of paper filters Ive seen lyeing about on the Strata over the past few years it has probably paid for itself :)

I know Creuse, very beautiful, My friend used to live in Gueret, very nice part of the world. Nearly bought a house on Chateau Neuf La Floret about 12 years ago but move d to Ireland instead!

Friends of my other half keep Llamas near you if you ever fancied a bit of llama trekking.

Montpellier was great last week, loved the 35c temps! can't be bad eh!
As for the filter if it means that less work but does the same job I may consider it. As for noise, it can't really make much more!

Cheers
Chris

I have a K&N in my disco 300 tdi and it does make a difference to me as I also have a vnt turbo which needs a load more air but the nicest thing about the K&N is you can take it out and clean it as much as you want. Problem with oem ones is they work fine when new but its not very long before they start to clog up and you cant wash em. Not so much of a problem for stock setup though I guess

Sorry to go off topic but how is the VNT Turbo working out?
I know this fella is selling them for 950 for a "bolt on kit" that seems to have some good reviews. IRB Developments - Diesel Tuning and More

Just wondered how much of a difference it makes to stock. My main aim is efficiency on the flat and the ability to go up hills with out the need to kick down every time.

The vnt is fantastic, it transforms the engine performance completely, there is no noticeable turbo lag from pull away to top speed. if driven sensibly (very hard :)) its also very good mpg. To try and compare it its much better than my chipped td5 was, the tdi engine is not quite as smooth as the td5 was but the vnt makes it a lot smother than stock.
I got mine from Allard as they have about 40 years of diesel tuning experience. I looked at the bell autos/IRB kit which is a straight bolt on but I couldnt get any info from them like boost pressure and torque curves so I went with allard.
From either companies its about 1100 quid and when you add the bigger intercooler which I believe you must, its a 1500 quid job so you have to decide if its worth it or not. It was to me as I wanted good performance from my disco and after one very bad experience with a td5 I didnt want another td5 so I found a good rust free (almost) low mileage 300 tdi and built on that

Nice one, I'll started saving (read sell and kidney and one of the kids).
Sounds like another job to add to the ever increasing job list!
Rapidly turning into a never ending story!

I love it!
