I have a 2007 Defender 90 TD5 now has 280 000 on the odo and still going very well.
Is their any advantage changing from the standard air filter to a K&N air filter, I have used either standard Land Rover or Britpart air filters.
where I stay here in southern Africa the roads are not good any more, there is a lot of sand, dust and grit on the "tracks"called roads.
With all the rubbish kicked up, I change air filters every 5000 Km (just in case)
I also have a mantec snorkel which as far as i am concerned, just another air flow restriction.
Would it be better to use "re usable" filters like the K&N and, are the performance advantages and "advanced filtering designs true, or just another myth..
Surely the Turbo boost pressure is controlled by the waste gate as well as the inlet manifold pressure sensor. The air flow improvement is gone, absorbed by the induction system flow and pressure controls.
So is it all hype, or has any body experienced any benefits after fitting such a air filter.
I have this thought pattern that says: more flow, less restriction, less restriction equals less filtering area, less filtering means more dust etc through the turbo into the inter cooler, then into the engine.
may be I should stick with the standard air filters like I have done with all my TD5 Land Rovers (from 1999 until now)
any ideas.

Personally I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, I swapped mine for a paper filter.

Thank you for the replies. Another point:What will the oil on the K&N do to the Maf sensor ?
No moving parts that need lubrication Ha Ha , so maybe just cover the electrics t with gunge.
I will stick to the standard filters like i Have been for the past 21 years.
Thanks Willie

Only if you overoil it, the oil is not supposed to leave the filter if a proper amount is used

Depends.

Normal road going car, paper filter be just fine. Mann brand is good.

The more free flowing the air inlet is the better the turbo will perform. The standard inlet on Defenders is awful, especially on TD5s and TDCis

Highly modified engine with a larger turbo etc.. the paper filters cant provide enough flow for the volume of air.

My VNT needs much much more air than the standard system can provide. So it will be having a 300tdi ITG filter with 3.5" inlet and 3" on the turbo side. This all makes a huge difference.

That said ive never been a fan of K&N i tried one in my 110 and the fit was so poor, same with Pipercross. However I found ITG to be much higher quality and have a much better fit.
