RR Sport & Disco 3 Body Off Engine Out

It's not often I come across a mechanical reason why I say, "I'm glad I drive a P38" but blooming heck that's frightening.

For those who didn't believe a previous thread where it was mentioned about taking the body off to get the engine and box out of a RR Sport and Disco 3 - take a look here

WANTED RANGE ROVER SPORT DISCO 3 WITH ENGINE PROBLEMS on eBay (end time 30-Aug-10 17:40:36 BST)

You're probably referring to me :p and I have been suitably re-educated thanks very much:D

Thats a frightening proposition. I'm always conscious that its never going to go back the same as before and have plenty of squeaks and rattles to attest to my inability to put things back together and I'm pretty careful about it. A full body off like that is a nightmare scenario for cables, airlines etc

going off that ad they have only done one, i think i'd be waiting till they have done a few just so i know the first one wasn't a fluke:D

So what happens when these things are 10+ years old with 200k on em and requiring lots of TLC. The only place they'll end when facing a big repair is the knackers yard!!

front yard, lash up a' frame, knackered chain block so you take all the paint off when you lift and the fire brigade to get it off ya when the frame collapses:D

If, as I believe, they build them from the chassis up with all the drive train etc. already fitted...why can't they be dismantled in reverse provided the correct equipment is available. Can't see any issues with disconnecting a few pipes and cable connectors, which is no more than what is done when removing an engine from above. Is it fear of the unknown ????

Not many peeps got a two poster ramp in there garden cos thats what is needed to lift body off.
Also how many peeps on here get into all kinds of problems doing a simple job like a water pump or timing belt on disco 1, just imajine the **** they will get into with one of those

This really feels like they're taking the mick. Its unnecessary and its trying to coerce owners to go to dealer workshops or at least a professional garage. Makes me almost angry. How far away from the Land Rover ethos of go anywhere, fix anyhow do these monkeys want to take it I wonder.

Reckon I better take care of my P38 cos I'd rather put half a million miles on it than get one of these!

Well, consider the extra cost of one of those. You could fully trick out your P38 with wider arches, supercharged wheels, front end conversion, paint and a nice satnav/dvd dash job.
Thats where my money would be spent although I'm not in the market for a sport so I'll carry on fixing on a pittance of a budget.

 is it only the RR Sport and Disco 3 that need this drastic action ? What about the "non-sport".
I agree this seems to go completely away from the RR ethos. It would definitely stop me from buying one :(

A plank through the widow openings and a chain hoist to the roof of my barn should do it, got enough height to take it up 15 feet, well out of the way:behindsofa::crazy::crazy:
