RF receiver Fix

Hi,
Has anyone managed to fix the RF receiver dodgy signal problem without stumping up for a new rf reciever?

Have already disconnected the aerial lead but still picking up dodgy signals and causing lots of grief..

for that you would need to know what is changed in the updated version, after all they can't change the frequency as it wouldn't work with the fob. i reckon its a shielding issue. maybe same as fitting a suppressor to the old stereos to omit electrical interference from the ignition ciruit????

I agree I think the problem is in the screening.
I have the second generation rf receiver fitted and it still picks up dodgy signals. looking inside it looks the same as the early one but with an additional shield over the circuit board, what I am wondering is if anyone has disabled the rf reciever in such a way as the becm knows its connected but the dam thing will not recieve anything.

My brother is an RF comms engineer,he reckons it will be down to better quality components which resist "breakththrough" from other rf activity transmitted around the 433MHZ band.
They do work alot better with the new one,I test them to see if the new type has been fitted by doing a sleep test on the BECM.I then try to wake them up with my Disco fob - if it stays asleep its the new one.So far I have only managed to wake them up with any P38 fob.

would that be the second or third generation rf receiver you're testing?

dunno what mine is but its disconnected, i dont have any issues with it as it is apart from having to be near to it to use the fob.

interestingly when you sit in the car, lock it, then press the sport button the little red led on the gear selector goes out. any idea what this is, is it outting it to sleep or telling it you are in there and want to be locked in so it doesnt sound the alarm if it picks your movement up?

On mine as long as the ignition isnt on it turns the little red light on and off wether the doors are locked or not..

i was just bieng a saddo and seeing what i needed to do to set the alarm off!

then i was intrigued to know what it actually did!!

I have found that if the rf reciever is totally disconnected the imobiliser cuts in with a message "press the remote" which doesn't do anything as the receiver is not there.
Also I have an old reciever that I attempted to butcher the aerial link on the mother board to completly reduce the range and all that has done is bugger it up to the state where the imobiliser asks for the remote to be pressed - which is a pain because I have to get out of the car go round to the receiver press the button and get back in......

its prolly easier to buy the new box!!!

YWY500170,none of the others are any good.There was one other that worked,but I seem to remember that there was a supplier problem with it and I dont think it ever got to the dealers.
I can understand not wanting to pay for the new one,but it works so well I think its worth it for the reduced hassle.

hi i've also go the old p38 prob with the battery going flat, only started since the cold weather but checked the battery and thats ok (also only 12 months old)

Q. is they a way to check to see if the prob is the ecu waking up from other signals via the rf reciever, As i dont mind at all buying the new reciever if its deff gonna fix my prob?

try disconnecting the aerial from the rf box, if your problem stops or is less frequent its the rf box. you can also cross reference the part numbers.

the good box number is in a previous post on this thread

I read somewhere that the part numbers from old and new boxes are the same? that the only difference was the inside.

Is it the box behind the boot lining side cover (drivers side)?

it is yes, just behind the seat..

Should be free from landrover as a fault not caused by you. WE WISH.

Even I managed to replace the receiver with no problems and I have the mechanical skills of a sponge. It's a bargain. I ordered mine from Brit Parts I think but they wouldn't supply directly to me for the receiver so I bought it via a local garage that Brit Part gave me the number for. 10 minute job and now (touch wood) my battery seems fine. Also I can open the damned door from miles away rather than basically poking it into the rear window and pressing the fob. Bargain. I can't remember the exact part number but it was the one I found from the many threads on here.

I don't know but I assume the improvement will just be better and more narrow bandpass filters to keep spurious RF signals out. I work in RF and a lot of the older kit was pretty naff at filtering stuff out. I suppose in the good old days there was a lot less stuff to try and exclude and the frequencies could be further apart. Nowadays with even kettles being capable of being controlled by a remote receiver the electronics has to be that much better. Price of progress.
