right this may be a simple question but the haynes isnt helping me!

how do i get the viscous coupling off? i got the right spanner but when i turn it, the belt and pulleys move to. do i have to jam them with something or have i done something wrong?

also, when its all out, how do clean the intercooler best :)

G

Two possibilities...

Press the belt down HARD with yer thumb while you undo the viscous... remember it's reverse thread!!!

If that still dunt work... wedge a prybar under the water pump pulley and have another go - should work then :D

Only use the prybar technique if you really can't do it any other way as if you overdo it with the bar you can knacker your water pump bearing toot sweet!

don't turn the spanner, hit the spanner with a hammer to shock the thread into submission (not forgeting that it is a left handed thread)

thanks lads. haynes dont tell you much does it :(

when the intercooler is out, whats the best solution to clean it out? i know i have to let it dry thoroughly, but i cant remember what to wash it out with.

G

Petrol works well... but do let it dry thoroughly and dispose of the residue carefully.

FFS... no matter what the temptation... do not try to do this quickly by using a lit match, unless you like that 'I pluck' look to your eyebrows and think rolling around on fire , screaming is a really good way to spend yer afternoon ;)

Good point Trewey... unless you're towing or using it off road a lot or in extreme temps.

When you do put the fan back on, DON'T USE THE SPANNER! Roll it up hand tight, by hand then hold one of the blades of the fan still (pair of pliers and a rag will stop you cutting yerself if yer viscous unit it knackered btw) and start the engine - the drag in the viscous unit is all the torque required to tighten the nut.

Of course... if you don't reinstall the fan... you don't need to do that :D

thanks for the tips, i just got the fan off (and cooked dinner) will have to leave the rad removal till tomorrow. how long should i dry the intercooler for?

tre as i am going to the sahara, i think i will leave me fan on thanks!

will use petrol on the intercooler, cheers.

Ah used thinners in my intercooler Griff, quicker than petrol. Ah suppose if ye seen me thread in the CF&Q section ye'd have known that;) :D :D

yer after thinking about it for 10sec i realised it might be a bad idea :) just been out and put 2 doses of petrol through it, then flushed with water. now its sat in the garage. will prob try the hairdrier tomorrow. whats the worst tht will happen if its not completely dry? and how long should i give it?

G

bollix, your right daft :( just seemed like the right thing to do!

2nd dose was nearly clean. i had to use 2.5litres ea time and now i have run out :D may have to walk to the garage tomorrow... or steal it out of the neighbours cars ;)

Bloody 'ell griff! ye only needed a wee drop of the stuff ( a pint) and keep givin' it a good shakin about:eek: ;) :D

If you've put water in it then I wouldn't add any more petrol... better bet would be to get hold of a pint or so of methanol - anyone around your way cook up there own bio?

Methanol (not meths FFS! :D) is a great drying agent, swill it around in the IC then pour out leave the empty IC it in the sun (hahahahahahahahahaha) and the residue evaporates pretty quickly.

For future ref. don't put water in yer IC ;)

haha! opps! inexperience coming through!

well i put it in a big 25l bag and swilled it around and around inside and out. emptied the bag out, put fresh in and did the same again. no chance of getting methanol unless B&Q do it. could walk there tomorrow! other than that, i is fooked cos we aint getting sun for a loooooooooong time.

weather is looking to be crap for everyone tomorrow :( downer
