Today we changed the crank pull and bolt. We then went to put on a new dayco belt off Ebay. We pulled the tensioner back using the right spanner etc and also we put the belt on the right way looked at diagrams off here and in the Haynes manual. But the belt would not go on the last pully, idler one..it was as if it was 1 inch to short. We then went and got another belt from part shop and again this one was also as if it was 1 inch to short. The tensioner was pulling back ok and we pulled it back as far as it would allow. We are lost on how to get this belt on as it is too short by about 1 inch. I would of thought there should be some slack and it not be tight as when tensioner is released it be even tighter??

Can I get a bigger belt ?

They are really tight to get back on, so best way is to route the belt so it's going over the crank pulley last, then get someone to turn the pulley with a socket and it will wind it' self on.

But it is 1 inch to short to get on. Won't it be then mega tight when on? And will it even wind itself on that way as can only get it on of crank as it won't fit as it looks short but compared it belt that came off and is same size. But was wondering if crank pull could be bigger although it was one for the car.

It will wind on don't worry unless Dayco belts run smaller which i doubt, i prefer gates myself.

We used to have the same problem, until I bought a set of long "aviation" spanners. Problem was we could not move the tensioner through its full range with standard spanner due to the angled head.

These work every time and are easier to pull with one arm !!

Thanks I got belt on but now I've another problem. It all ran OK but then belt flew off and I checked and alternator was on an angle.

I've a 2005 landrover freelander 1 td4 bmw engine and the bottom bolt on the alternator has snapped from where it bolts into not the bit on the alternator the bit the bolt goes into. If I'm asking sense. Is this a bracket attached to engine or is it all part of the engine?

Will the alternator be OK with top bolt and the bolt at the back? Or will I need all 3 bolts fitted and if so how do I fix this
 
Am hoping this is the part needed number 11
