I have just removed my transmission from a 1996 4.0 se P38 and was surprised that there are no Dowl pins in the bell housing to engine join.
Is this normal ?
I find it strange as this would help with the alignment of the gearbox.
Also the Flexplate or intermediate plate had cracked completly around the crankshaft and was only driving on the jagged "teeth" of the crack.

i had the same problem on a customers car, there is supposed to be dowls there. ring up your local stealers and order some replacements. check the mounting tube before fitting the new flex plate, if its slightly damaged they advise changing it so the flex plate sits completely central.

went to the stealers checked on the system ..........and there is none shown ............. or part numbers

answers on a postcard please

they are shown for the transfer box to auto box but not the engine/autobox

Now i have a new rpi flexplate a recon autobox/torque converter and transfer box and don't want to mess this up because of the dowl pins does anyone know the part :smash: number?:smash:

The dowels will be a nominal size, e.g. 5mm, 6mm, 8mm or 1/4", 5/16" etc.
Use a drill for example as a gauge to determine the exact diameter. Hardened and precision ground dowels are available from good engineers supplies companies in varying lengths which can be ground down in length to suit. Any local Toolmaking companies should also have them and would probably give them to you for a contribution to their "Tea kitty". An alternative is to use Silver Steel, whilst not hard is tough and finish ground to size.
