Right, thanks all for the advice given, great help.

I have since sorted the small leak I had BUT.....
I have since done a lot of research and have realised my car NEVER, and I mean never no matter how much thrashing or driving, overheats under normal driving.

But as soon as I put a trailer on the back with some weight or I leave the car ticking over It gets very hot and overheats (since I mentioned the overheating a month ago I have not let it overheat, but the heat gauge slowly creeps up and the car is turned off, i dont let it get near the red but its heading that way, this is just shunting trailers around the yard)

From what i have read online, It seems a common problem with all range rovers no matter if its the petrol or diesel.

Once at normal running temp, I stopped the car and tried turning the viscous fan by hand which turned easily, have not yet tried stopping the fan whilst the car is running.

Does this mean that the fan is on its way out and why its over heating because its not providing enough cooling under load.

Also can it be down to the water pump? and is it possible to make sure its working without removing it?

Finally, the car has two electric fans on the front of the radiator, they never ever come on no matter how hot it seems to get, are these standard on this range rover or have they been added as after market?

If I wire these to a switch on the dash so that I can turn them when towing, does this in fact make the viscous fan redundant, ie I dont have to replace it, or does it serve some other purpose such as being belt driving anything else?

Dont be scared to get me told if i am wrong
Many thanks

I agree with that

Is it necessary to fix the viscous fan or can I just use additional double electric fans wired to a switch on the front of the radiator to help it along. or does it have a secondary purpose.

Radiator is only a year old or so, but will try flushing it and refreshing coolant when I get chance.

Cheers

you can do it with the rad in but you will need to take the shroud off I am guessing.

just make sure you hit the nut the right way to get it off!

I dont know which way that is on a p38 though lol

Being a diesel you'll have to hit it clockwise.
To remove the fan, place a 32mm wrench and hit it with a sharp smack. Then you'll need to remove at least one of the radiator pipes and loosen the nut from the windscreen washer bottle. Take the clips from the radiator cover and loosen the fan. The fan as to come out at the same time as the shroud. Do not remove the belt as it helps lock the fan in place.

Is this the viscous fan coupling I need?

Thanks

Had to change fan on my diesel and had to get whole unit viscous not available seperate, dont think thats right one.

Are the viscous couplings and fan interchangeable between engines, ie, does a viscous fan unit from a 4.0 and 4.6 petrol fit the diesel 2.5, because they all look similar but the diesel ones are much more expensive?

Cheers

Ok just had a thought, I might be being stupid here, but as I have never looked or worked this low on the engine....

Is the water pump behind the viscous fan? Does the fan and coupling sit on the same shaft and it turns the pump?

Just thought Id check as I have no idea and should probably change the water pump at the same time

cheers

Here is a link to a very useful video on the subject -

Most likely to be the viscous fan as it only happens at low speed or towing. Worth checking the pump as the impellers do break up.
I can send you a simple mod to use the aircon fans as engine cooling, PM with an email address if you want details:)

It is in Rave. You can get a new fan for a diesel from island-4x4. Britpart one is £58.33 + VAT and OEM one is about £100 + Vat. Not too sure about the one you have seen on ebay. Make sure you change the thermostat for an BMW one from the dealer. I bought a 'quality aftermarket' one that was no good. If you have to refill the coolant run the engine while you are filling and have the heater/aircom on its highest setting. Make sure the breather tube between the expansion tank and top of the radiator is clear - blow though it.
good luck
