Hi folks

Had a seven and half tonner try to customise the Freebie on an island yesterday - airbags went off like a baloon factory and the force of impact threw me across the car so hard that the gear selector was snapped in two!! Feeling both sore and lucky this AM.

Question now is will insurance company write the car off?? Tried to attach a pic. Any thoughts? I am sure I will know in the fullness of time but I am unsure what companies class as a write off - I guess its when the cost of the damage exceeds the value of the car?

That is repairable, its cosmetic damage. There isnt that much damage from the picture you have provided.

It also looks like you drove it home, so again its panel damage which are easily changed. The airbags arent cheap which will add to the cost but it wont exceed vehicle value.

Roughly £2.5k to £3k to repair.

Thats a write off as well as the "Panel damage" and steering /drive train damage, and the cost of replacing the airbags rad, bumper lights etc. There's also the fact that you have undoubtably damaged the body shel. Freelanders been mononcoque construction the bodyshell is structural unlike discos, defenders, etc. thats a cat A writeoff.

That is never a CATA write off, there is no damage to the wheel as far as i can see which would indicate no drivetrain damage and the radiator looks perfect,i gaurantee that will be repaired, the chassis legs if damaged will be pulled no problem on a laser jig, the front is crumple zone and is designed to fall apart to avoid 'Body shell damage' and be re-built quite easy. Apart from the obvious the car looks fine.
Once its approved it will take 2 weeks max from parts ordering to fitting.

I have just seen approved an Audi A2 that has the drivers wifes face smeared on most of the dash and windscreen (she survived) in a much worse state structually and it will be ready within 3 weeks and thats on a car much older and no longer in production. Yes the driver isnt happy but front ends always LOOK worse than they really are as thats what the cars are supposed to do. Fall Apart.

Blimey. Genuinely feel gutted for you mate. That was one a very nice car.

sorry to hear about ur car mate, same happend to me 6 month's ago, back end just went from me, insurance guy just came to house and wrote it off, there and then ! passenger wheels all buckled and four tyres came off car, i disagreed and sent it to be checked over by a third party, who told me there was no damage underneath, just needed, new wheels and tyres and a full geo set up. back on road, but had to av insurance guy to drive car and put a brand new mot on car ! hope ev thing goes ok

Aha!! it seems that I have set up some good healthy debate here.

I was pretty vague with my post this AM as I was trying to get stuff sorted with insurance etc. I will elaborate further ;

I was turning right at an island and was hit from the nearside by a lorry (driver claimed not to have seen me) - the impact knocked me into the concrete bollard in the middle of the island which has taken a big old chunk out if the edge of the offside alloy. As regards being drivable, there is no coolant in the engine for one and I was towed back. The drivers door is difficult to open as it catches on the wing and the impact caused both the hard top catches to open! To be fair, the seat belt tensioners and the air bags did their job but my left leg belted the gear lever so hard that it has snapped off down in the gaitor. The silver alloy bar which runs across the front appears to be attached to what i assume are the chassis legs - both of these are bent.

My understanding is that Cat A is written off and all the parts have to be destroyed - I doubt that would be the case, If it is going to be written off I would imagine it would be more likely a CAT C or D. Its certainly repairable - just depends if the insurance company deem it economically viable I guess! Being frank, I hope they dont!!

Here's a couple more pics for the debate - winner gets a curly-wurly!! ;-)

description of salvage writeoff codes.

A - Not for resale. Fire damaged (burnt-out), flood damaged (contaminated or salt water), severely damaged with no serviceable parts, or heavily stripped (shell).
Notification of Destruction required. (To be crushed). Recorded at DVLA & HPI.

B - Not for resale. Damaged beyond economical repair and/or severe structural damage.
Notification of Destruction required. (Parts can be removed and sold). Recorded at DVLA & HPI.

C - Repairable salvage. Generally applies to older vehicles. Can be sold for repair but must now have VIC inspection.
Recorded at DVLA & HPI.

D - Repairable salvage. Minimal damage sometimes stolen and found after claim has been paid, or cost of repair combined with difficulty obtaining new parts to enable a swift repair.
Recorded with HPI.

X - Repairable salvage. Not recorded on any registers such as HPI. Limited or very light damage, or vehicle is new or less than 12 months old. Usually requires minimal repair work.
NOT Recorded with HPI.

Hope your ok matey - thats the main thing.

I'm going with the repair option as your car is reasonably new. However, I do look at salvage sites and its surprising what gets written off for little damage. MG-Rover's tend to be scrapped very easily as many beleive that parts are hard to get.

The labour cost will prob be a deciding factor, but if it was me I would have a go at repairing.

If they do offer you a settlement - you can always make a few quid by breaking you vehicle. Its an upsetting decision for some, but i broke my last car (Rover 220) for spares and made back £550!! And it was 12 years old with 170K on the clock!!

Hope it goes the way you want it.

Regards,

Steve

Hi Outlander, sorry to hear about your accident fella but as it has all ready been mentioned as long as your ok that the main thing!!!

Isnt it dangerous to repairer cars like this i mean next time they have accident they might not be as affective? (just a thought) Think i saw something on fifth gear with 2 focuses that they crashed into each other??

Yeah I am fine thanks - testament to Land Rover build quality I guess. I always thought whiplash was a b/s condition bought about by people who want to bump up insurance claims but the way my back & neck feels now tells a different story!

I'm glad we all agree that it aint no CAT A write off. Its repairable very easily im my opinion.

Not cheap but your car is the face lift model which will still be worth a fair few quid, if they do offer a settlement figure my advice would be to then buy the vehicle off them and repair it yourself.

I have done this with motorbikes in the past and made a killing.

Let us know how you get on.
