I have a Freelander 2 diesel 2004 LHD, bought some 2 years ago, and it's been off the road in a garage on and off for half that period. I must say it's the worst car I have ever come across. But I'm stuck with it, at least for one more year. Without going into details of the numerous issues, the current one is the engine has blown again. The garage has got it running again but thence refitting the turbo there are clunking noises coming from the head or thereabouts. They are now looking closer at this.

The expression pouring good money after bad comes to mind but I have to write-off the previous 2000euros and again 1000euros (I live in Spain) for previous works, engine, transmission etc. I am looking for a replacement engine as a solution. Should I stick with the same model and year(ish) or are there better options. Googling...this is supposed to be a reliable car and engine but my experience has been way the other extreme.

I have nothing but praise for my old Toyota RAV 4iii bought new in 2004 but stupidly trashed in a drink drive in 2021. This Freelander was all I could afford at the time. Big regret but am stuck with it. I would like to make it right as it is a comfortable drive although not much power but I need a 4x4 with towhook and this car should be OK but these engine issues??. It's certainly not my style of driving causing the problems.

Any suggestions are most welcome.
