Oops - took my v8 RRC swimming !!!

What are u missing to stop it running? do u have a spark to the plugs or to the centre of the dizzy?
Do u have an injection pulse?

I killed my disco 1 v8 the other day after jet washing the engine bay. Ran perfect then I turned it off to tidy up and then it wouldn't restart, it turned out to be a wet small connector plug from the dizzy, just down the back of the cap the wires transfer the switching earth to the ignition Amplifier. I missed this to start with as the plug looked quite sealed. Opened it and it was full to the brim of water. Dried it out and job done. Hope this is of help.

The Ecu's are quite well sealed but maybe not submergable, they have a rubber gasket between the two halves. If your dizzy cap wasn't sealed on with silicone then a bit of damp/condensation in there is always a killer.

Update...

Havnt got round to taking the ECU out yet - off on holiday 2moz so kinda need to get it on the drive as im on side of road at the mo so focusing on starting. Anyway, new Rotor, Dizzy, Coil + HT arrived today so fitted all those and charged battery up over night.

Plugged it all in + all the ECUs i removed yesturday and it still wont start. So then i checked for fuel - dry - so now im presuming i ran out yesturday! So ive refilled it and now i cant here the fuel pump running - could i of burnt it out by running it dry? Im in the process of reading the RAVE now on troubleshooting the fuel pump.

Can some one please tell me it should be OK? I will happily buy a new ECU if needs be but it will make my GF happier if she knows it will be ok !!!

Dont think itll run without the ecu being sorted. Spray all ignition stuff with wd to disperse any water.

Dunno if it will be alright - if you changed the dizzy are you sure the timing is correct? and is the ignition amplifier O.K? ECU looks for trigger pulse from negative side of coil to fire injectors - if there is no spark then ECU won't inject go go juice. Same result if the wire to the ECU isn't connected or the wire is broken or the spade terminal has come off (yes - check the condition of the coil connections carefully). Also check main earth points as injectors are earth switched.

Fuel pump is primed by the ECU. If the ECU is broken the pump may not run, but it might also be a stuck relay, blown fuse or possibly the inertia switch is open instead of closed. Is the EFI warning light coming on at all?

No lights - what relays + fuses shall i check.

Ive been told by the GF to stop ready to leave at 5 im gonna try to get the fuel pump running then get the ECU out on a radiator!

Ecu is priority. Its the engines brain and controls injection. Maybe its time for some carbs?

Four pages in and we've established the EFi ECU needs sorting and fuses n relays need looking at.
brilliant!

Fair point haha!

Holidays lovely! Rented a house in North Wales, missus has cooked me a big saus egg + bacon toast and the house doesnt even have ketchup let alone brown sauce :( !

Either way, all the ECU's (brakes, EFi, LPG stuff, radio etc) are on various radiators around the house so should be nice + dry soon !

Ironic really, I'm in North Wales, you could have brought the ECU across and I could have plugged it in on mine and then checked for fault codes.

D'oh! Come over this way quite alot so if needs be i can nip in lol. Spoke to a mate whos an auto spark - he reckons as it was fresh (i.e non salty) water it should live fingers X'd !!!

PS Kev - love your piccie - what mods you done to make that happen, apart frm snorkel which i think was my downfall !

I don't mind if you want to drop in, I have a code reader for the 14CUX.

Well, to make 'em swim there are all sorts of little mods you can do, if you search the V8 section you can find all sorts of info, type in a search for swimming V8, or water proofing. All mine has is a home made snorkel, sealed up dizzy cap, extended breathers and a small splash guard in front of the dizzy, oh and reasonably good door seals!

well.

bit of a frustrating read this one.

first off im annoyed that you bought a load of new stuff which probably wasnt necessary!

and then it just seems you havent quite grasped the basics of where these engines fail. this is fair enough but i would have hoped for a little clearer info so far.

as far as i see it, here's the situation:

youve sat your rover v8 up to the bonnet in water at hill n ditch (of all places)

so, you need to check DEFINITELY

front axle
rear axle
gearbox
transfer case
fuel tank
engine sump, rocker covers, pancake breather.
if no snorkel then OMG the whole ####ing engine but start with the inlet plenum.
distributor.
power steering reservoir
starter motor
alternator
ecu
radio (will be ####ed)
heater box (will hopefully recover)

its very likely that if your car is standard you now have a lot of work to do now!

this may be alarming for you.

also, please avoid hill and ditch, once you have rebuilt the car it is not worth returning. i am still finding sand in places that i havent stripped down yet from a couple of hill and ditch sessions nearly 3 years ago.

so.

where do you want to start?

we/i can advise you on all aspects of repairing your offroaded v8 land rover.

trust me on this i HAVE been there!! :D
