Chaps,

Got a few gremlins with my TD5 53 plate and just want to clarify the diagnostics I have.

1. On tickover its very lumpy and sounds like its gonna stall, when changing gear it blows out puffs of black smoke. Had it on a diagnostics machine and it says No 1 injector short curcuit, and thats all it says.

Is that the injector itself or just a fault in the wireing loom ?

2. diesel gauge fluctuates between totally empty to near full, then totally empty and stays there with the empty light on. Have cut out a section of carpet in the boot floor to reveal the inspection plate but cant get the plastic cap off to view the float.

Would it be a sticky float? or a dodgy sender unit?

Its my first post in this section so please be gentle

Regards

for £20-30 worth trying injector loom easy fit ,why cut carpet when you can undo it and fold it back ,knock locking ring round with large screw driver and hammer or large pair of grips ,fit seal to tank when refitting, when out check to see if dodgy connection or float reads right when moved

Ok, just heard back from the garage, new injector loom fitted, still has same problem, diagnostics say all injectors working in time with each other. :(

Any ideas peeps?

Fuel gauge sorted.

Same problem as in lumpy running and near stall ?, ( as I take it " all injectors working in time ", means the injector fault is now cured ).

I would start by checking you air filter, then your turbo hoses and your air flow sensor. ( you can simply unplug this to see if its faulty, as the ecu uses its own values in the sensors absence ).

According to the garage that No1 injector fault was probably an old fault that hadn't been cleared.
Ok, when its cold and sitting at idle at under 1000rpm its lumpy with lots of black smoke from exhaust, put foot on gas and driving its absolutely fine apart from when changing the manuel gear box it sends out a puff of black smoke.
I done a service on it 2 weeks ago so air filter is fine, will check the turbo hoses and air flow sensor.
I have had the ECU out and checked inside for oil as the red plug had oil inside, have now removed the oil and any remnants with brake and clutch cleaner, ECU was free from oil.
The man in the garage reckons it could be a faulty ECU or is he tyring to pull my pants down and bend me over ??

Thanks in Advance

Steve.

Mr mechanic said he has a defender ECU and he will stick it on the disco to see if it is the problem.

My question is will a defender ECU work on a disco ???

I can't see why not.

Steve.

All sorted now.
It came down to dirty injectors and faulty injector seals, as it happened mr mechanic had another set of clean injectors so he fitted new copper seals and fitted the injectors.
It now purrs on tickover and drives normal with no sign of black smoke.
It has cost me £400 which I thought would have been a lot more so i'm happy :)

I thought I would tell all about this as diagnosis to anyone else who has such a problem in the future.

Steve.

Glad its sorted. £400 for replacement injectors is a fair price. I'm assuming he kept your old ones which can be serviced.

Yeah, he said he's got them just in case of anymore drama's.
Hopefully there won't be anymore drama's.

Steve.
