In the interets of science I've ordered one of the BioTuning - Vegetable Oil Diesel Vehicle Conversions Parts, Kits and Information exchangers and a couple of their valves and will be putting something together over this weekend and will report my findings. I'd be interested to know how to came to the conclusion that your exchanger should be of that design, including it's dimensions based on thermal mass and heat gain/loss etc

As far as i can see no one sells what i think would be the ideal solution:

Feel free to add/edit this list of what i think is required.

1, Low thermal mass exchanger (your's looks quite chunky so bringing it to temp will be a lengthy process)

2, Auto switch over when temp is reached

3, Electrically assisted heating of exchanger when ambeint temp is lower than approx +2 (or whatever temp SVO starts going gloopy)

4, Interface between fuel switch over sensor and assisted heating function to enable starting using SVO when engine temp permits

5, Total bypass so that main tank can be filled with diesel without using heating system - this is in the event of SVO not being available

6, Sensible set of indicator/working signals/lights that dont resemble the space shuttles dash

7, Secondary tank system that allows external filling

1, Low thermal mass exchanger (your's looks quite chunky so bringing it to temp will be a lengthy process) Provided your water is up to temp it takes less than 20 sec to raise the entire block from cold to 80 DEG C Our heat exchanger was specifically designed to heat Veg oil. The one you have bought is a Oil cooler, designed for cooling the engine oil, hence it has no insulation and that there is a huge mounting plate that is connected thermally to the heat exchanger to disipate heat to the vehical body. You will need to insulate it. Not realy the right part for the job. Also you will note with the part you have bought the 'Input for Water !' is 12mm and most water hoses for the heater matrix are 3/4" or 19mm. So you will also need to make an adaptor from 12mm to 19mm. This is because as I said this is an oil cooler.

2, Auto switch over when temp is reached. Yep our does this !!

3, Electrically assisted heating of exchanger when ambeint temp is lower than approx +2 (or whatever temp SVO starts going gloopy) No we will never do this, as we have an efficient heat exchanger adding an electrical element will only try to heat your cold water coolant. To do this you need a seperate electrical heater.

4, Interface between fuel switch over sensor and assisted heating function to enable starting using SVO when engine temp permits. Auto up to temp switch.

5, Total bypass so that main tank can be filled with diesel without using heating system - this is in the event of SVO not being available. Yes we can also do this, although the heater remains connected it will not heat the diesel. Very hot diesel looses it's lubricating properties.

6, Sensible set of indicator/working signals/lights that dont resemble the space shuttles dash. We provide an LED indicator.

7, Secondary tank system that allows external filling. We don't sell tanks !!

8. If you have bought the Pollak Motorised Fuel Selector Valve, send it back and change it for the Tecalemit valve they sell. The shafts on the motors shear off because they cannot handle the high veg temperature. If you want to try one cheap you can usually get one for £20.00 + Shipping

One other thing, does bio-tuning do this full time ? there is no telephone support and in fact no telephone number !

I guess you get what you pay for ! We have a dedicated tech support line !

Thnaks for your comments - it was the Tecalemit valves i ordered, and have since found a local supplier who had some surplus stock for £4 ea so i now have more than enough to do all of my vehicles.

I take your point regarding the biotuning exchanger, i am hoping to be able to mount it directly or in very close proximity to the engine block therefore avoiding any heat loss via the mounting plate.

Could i ask how many of your exchangers have been sold so far via your site and how long have they been in use?

thanks

Hi,

Yes provided that you mount the exchanger on a hot surface it should be fine - you could try pipe lagging round the exchanger that will work well. Our heat exchangers have been sold for about two years now, although initially we started with a slightly different design. Our current design heat exchanger has been for sale for about 18 months and we have sold many hundred's mainly into europe, with no problems. We of course run our vehicals every day using them as well !! If I can be of any further help then please let me know.

Hi seanmoore2006

By the way if you need the 12mm to 19mm hose adaptor I have some here (only thing is that I don't know the working temp / pressure of the adaptors as we use them for cold fuel) I will gladly send you a couple free of charge. If you need them just PM me with your address and I will pop them in the post.

What do you recommend for a TD5 then? Can it run on this stuff and will it be reliable?

We have a Volvo FM12 in our work at the minute with a set of bo11oxed injectors and fuel pump due to running on bio-diesel, it uses the same design Delphi injectors as the TD5 does, so I'm more than just a bit sceptical about using the stuff. It may be lots cheaper to buy the fuel, but injectors can be upto £500 a pop, and if it's all go's t1ts up, I can't see you boys footing the bill.
Unless you want to give me a written guarantee....
