I've been looking at a ps10, cos I'm cheap. Thought I better get an insurance quote.
"Sorry it's a Van"
4×4 light utility on the log book
It's a station wagon
"It's a Van sorry, but we'll give you a quote, can't have it on a multi car policy because it's a Van "
Why does it cost more to insure than a defender td5 county?
"It's a commercial vehicle"
It's more than my other two cars combined (disco 2 and a Honda jazz) and worth a lot less than a defender
Sorry but we can't do it as anything else.

So I spoke to the DVLA
it's a 4x4 light utility but it's not a Van, it would say van on the document including what type of van it is. If it doesn't say Van it's not a Van . Your insurance company should be able to do that for you

So I called them again
"Computer says Van, I can get you a Van quote,
Why? Because the DVLA say it's not a Van.
The underwriters only go by the system
Can you contact the underwriters please , I can provide pictures of the vehicle and the DVLA say it's not a Van.
Sorry I have checked our resources and the computer says no. The underwriters won't help you because they use the system.

So it's twice the price of a defender to insure, even with the same no claims, so I entered it onto a certain meerkat involved comparison site and they've got it down as a Van too. And the confusing one.
The DVLA SAY IT'S NOT A VAN.

Jeeses

On a side note there are a couple of pretty nice looking defender on ebay, location given as GB. and nicely priced too. Cept they want to ship the vehicle to you using an escrow service they suggest or paypal pay after delivery. Yeah right.

I once had this problem. I owned a very sought-after Land Rover 110 TD5 Double Cab limited edition 'Black' model , I didn't like it because it was fully loaded with factory leather seats, air con, electric windows , carpets, roof rack etc. , far too poosh for me so I sold it and bought a very basic 110 TD5 double cab. I rang my insurance to swap registration no.s and they told me I would need to pay an additional premium of £660. 'But why it's the same vehicle , same engine, chassis, body, brakes etc but less sought after with no extras' I should be getting a refund not paying more?? ; "because the new vehicle is a commercial vehicle and the old one was a car" Total rip off.

Last year i insured my 110 USw as a van on my commercial insurance, cost half as much as a car insurance.

This year, the insurance company wouldn;t insure it as a van as it comes up as a car on their database now.

Insured it as a Van with another company ( axa )

Other companies see it as a car

it's luck of the draw as to how it's listed on the insurance companies database. No matter how much you complain, it wont make any difference..it's on the computer so it must be right
