Hi not been here too long and I own a 01 p38 4.6 bosch auto sat at 146k everything seems to be working on it (phew) but the engine seems to be making a tapping ticking noise on idling/running bit like sticky lifters or something has anyone had same issue resolved or can shed any light on this thanks in advance regards mike

Hey there,
A few checks,
Oil level?
Last oil and filter change?
Hopefully not the scary scenario I'm thinking...
Does it change hot or cold?
@Saint.V8 , got his own ticking thing as well!!;)

Oil filled yesterday but change and filter in mind soon exactly same from cold to run for 4 hours same sound same pitch just faster under load from what I can tell seems it comes from passenger side and possiy cylinder head few other pros people have similar but due to maf o2 issues I believe thanks for the reply won't let me post a video of it

Put the video onto YouTube and then share the link.
So your oil levels are good then.
When was the last oil filter change?

Only had it a week mate was a part ex but decided to run it at a guess a while ago think it was stood for 2 or 3 month but as soon as I get upto speed with it itl have a full service all filters leads plugs done etc just wondering if I'm gonna need to do head too but I'm not getting oil pressure light or nothing clogged filter can cause this? Issue cheers

Just trying to eliminate the easy bits before the big stuff steps in.
You have heard about slipping liners?
I'm not saying that is your problem by any means without seeing it or having any physical diagnosis and certainly not by internet diagnosis either. Do you know the people who owned it or any history?
As you know trying eliminate all the easy things can sometimes reveal something simple and not so expensive...

20w50 High Zinc should be used in the Rover V8.

Remember its a 1960s engine with mid nineties fuel injection slapped on top...

Does the noise appear once its hot or is it there constantly from cold?

If it has stood, I'd be checking the lifters first.

Yes, I have a tick - stripped heads off - no liner issues on mine, now (slowly) putting it back together again and replacing the lifters, rockers, shafts, pedastals, pushrods etc. Time will tell.

Also, check the exhaust manifold gaskets - oddly, a blowing exhaust gasket sounds like a ticking!

Thanks guys real help by real people appreciated I will be having a good look round a few areas today see if I can norrow it down somewhat new to rangies so only time will tell ha ha but I have no history of it really just its been stood a couple of months got a crap battery on it changing that this morning gonna have a look at throttle sensor as found one inside the car also will try and get a video of the noise itself and post later as for being cold the noise constant from startup to turning it off cheers again the oil additive any good for lifters wynns stuff

What he said.

Well worth an oil and filter change though. Cannot hurt and might help. 20/50 might make it sound smoother at that mileage.

I think the liners normally start ticking when the engine is hot and then get worse but as you don't know when it started you cannot rule it out - although I think that is more of a slappy-tick than your clicky-tick. Head gasket is the one everyone is studiously avoiding although that isn't like your clicky-tick there. Putting UV dye in the coolant and then seeing if it turn up in the oil with a UV torch can rule that one out. Or there's the gases in the coolant test whose name escapes me at the moment.

Hydrocarbon Sniff Test - Block Tester - I have a Draper kit that I think is called Block Tester.....

This was my noise....

The ticking is slower on mine than it seems on yours...... the Cam (which the lifters run on) runs half the crank speed - I would be pulling the sump off and checking the big ends as it could be ticking at crank speed not cam speed....

Is it possible to tell how 'deep' the noise is from higher up the block or lower down the block?

Others may have differing opinions.

That's similar sounding like a tinny noise I'll go for another video in a lil bit it's raining right this sec noise wise is very similar although yours seems a lil intermittent
