New Series 3 arrived at home (photo's) ENGINE WHAT IS IT?

No idea what that engine is, sorry...but i'd say it needs pulling out and a 200tdi putting in.

There should be 4 glowplugs, you'll only see the top of them and there will be a 'daisy-chain' of wiring connecting them together...they will be under the fuel pipes on the right of that engine as you look at it...
 
looks like a 4,203,there int no glow plugs as such its a flame starter,should be a little ignitor/glow pluggy type thing on the inlet manifold and a fuel source forit to ignite
it,ll be summit like this screwed into yer inlet manifold

The brown cable going to it isn't connected in the cab. Should this be connected to 12v off the ignition switch?
 
I've come to the conclusion its the heater plug in the inlet manifold. I've tested for fuel in several places and its fine. I can get the car started with easy start sprayed on the heater plug in the manifold. I ahve also noticed the heater plug has a brown single cable running off it. This runs into the cab and is wrapped round the steering wheel where its bare. There is also another bare brown cable which is fed to the +12v off the battery. I'm guessing these were connected together so the heater can heat up and then the ignition started.

Does this sound right?
Could I connect this upto a switch so I can switch it on so it recieves 12v for 10-15 seconds before i start the ignition?

no problem with the switch approach - though you could use a timer relay connected to ignition - i.e. you turn ignition on and it turns heater on for the desired time then automatically off again... Just a suggestion, nothing wrong with just a switch :)
 
TIS a 4 203 perky my boy,on your manifold you should have a glo plug with a wire going to it plus a pipe from fuel filter [normally],glo plug gets hot,diesel drips onto it ,fire is created and sucked into manifold,heating engine,bit of cranking,,,bingo!!!!!!!!!away she goes,,tis an old fashioned idea but it works.......dave
 
Great so could I try as a quick fix just to make sure I could get landy running would be too....

Connect the glow plug upto the 12v+ of the battery for 10 seconds before starting engine?

Also would it ever make a real loud pop?

Tried just connecting it up quickly other day and after about 4 seconds I got a huge loud pop which scared me to death.
 
Turn power on to the heater, then wait a few seconds, crank the engine with the heater still powered, then leave it on for a few secs when the engines running.
The bang possibly was caused by fuel vaporised by the plug, then ignitied by hot gasses comming back up past the inlet valves, or a build up of vaporised suel in the exhaust ignited by the flame plug flames passing through the engine to the exhaust.
