The Boss has bought me a project to keep me busy while I'm at home all day doing nothing !!!!

Its her weekend car a 2000 1.8 in Alveston Red. 3dr Hardback 28000miles

Immaculate inside and out and very clean all round.

We would not have got it if it had not been as clean and tidy as it is.

Full service history and all paperwork from Colliers in Birmingham, 1 lady owner from new. (Genuine)

Had a few things to do so far of course

Replace 1 keyfob and have it connected to car by garage £10 from eBay for key and £25 to garage for sorting it out two others that the dealer had supplied but said were faulty. So now we have a surplus

Replaced clock as it had missing digits £30 from eBay now we can tune in radio

Replaced rubber bonnet covers near windscreen as both were very grotty

Touched up tiny spot of rust on rear door edge above handle.
Most I have seen have this problem for some reason

Replaced brake clips on bulkhead as 2 had broken and brake pipe flapped about

Sprayed speaker grilles and replaced foam pads in as someone had cleaned them with gunge and speakers rattled at high volume.

Purchased a 6CD player to fit to R770 radio fit as soon as I have finished the garden

Given the whole car a complete clean and the plastics and hardback have come up like new.

So still worried about all the Freelander problems and to put off the inevetable as long as possible I intend to ensure that as many preventative measures are taken as possible.

I have been looking at the coolant level and temperature warning sensors and have ordered the parts that TMHM and Hippo have suggested.

Will fit them when they arrive and let you know how it works.

This will give an audible and visual warning of any coolant problems. Not sure where to put the temp sensor yet though.

I cant see a plastic thermostat in any hose so I would imagine that it also needs the thermostat kit so I will fit that one as well. Unless anyone can tell me where it should be on the car.

Can anyone suggest any other known mods that should be done to this mark one to keep her on the road ?

So apart from a box of matches and a petrol can

Your suggestions would be very much appreciated

change the head gasket for mls, fit the oil rail and new bolts, new water pump at same time, and fit the prt thermo kit, and if you must mix water with your coolant use de- ionised water

Great advice

I will do that and will sort out the coolant level sensor and have ordered a digital thermal sensor for the engine.

Anyone found the best place for the spares for the head rebuild?

I have been unable to find a supplier on the net that offers a genuine HGF kit so does this mean I have to order all the parts separately?

Have located a genuine pump at reasonable price but TMHM suggests EWP any one tried that ?

Thanks for you replies

The whole reason for suggesting an EWP is that it can be controlled in such a manner so that it will continue to run after the engine is switched off. Thereby ensuring that there are no hotspots and cavitation is reduced to an absolute minimum. It also has a secondary benefit in that the flow rate varies with temperature, so that the engine can warm up quicker, irrespective of position of thermostat. It could be argued that a thermostat is less necessary.

Fanatic

Nice to see your aggression is still up to scratch, see our other thread and see if you can also answer that one with slightly less gusto.

Thank you for the link and if you HAD read my thread on Repairers and Dealers you would see that I am well aware of Lancaster and have used them for years.

Just to explain the situation they wanted £20 more for the exact same parts as I purchased of eBay from a Main dealer up north.

You may ask why did I not go to them for the HGF spares, the answer is simple they only do aftermarket HGF kits but were able to supply the other items as genuine parts in LR packaging.

Maybe you could find another link with the correct parts required if you know what is needed.

Post it on our other thread so we can all see just how clever you can be without being aggressive.

TMHM

Thanks for your sensible reply.

You have given a manufacturer for this product have you any experience of fitting this yourself ?

Just an observation
As you may notice we have a growing number of aggressive members that are extremely rude as well. It's OK to me but has been putting off new members.

It would appear that they are all out to offend rather than help. Why use the Forum if all they can do is be rude and unhelpful to member who are asking for help?

Surly the Forum is the place for sensible discussion not belligerence.

If you have knowledge that can help others why not use it?

i think yu might have got it wrong - the forum is not a sensible place for discussion - its a chat room - its a place to meet up with friends - its a place to abuse and be abused in a non personal manner - Fanny is just a pratt - but a well meaning pratt :D. Wait till you need his advice - it is invaluable.

Personal abuse and bullying is summat different - but he aint personal - he is the same with everyone :p.

you may not believe it, but some peeps think I am rude aswell

Hey! I was on here for over four months and I never got any abuse or insults - I was feeling very left out and alienated - but once I mentioned it on a thread they soon welcomed me properly with open arms, erm I mean open abuse and rudness. Now I feel like I am accepted, so don't knock it, it just means they like you.

One thing yu need to remember is how many replies have yu had, Red - post the same Q on LRO or many of the other sites and yu will be waiting a week or so for any reply - just cut the wheat from the chaff.

i wouldnt bother with any thing to add or to protect engine just fit later head gasket with metal dowels its only the complicated way they had of sealing top of liners that was a problem ,if done before excessive overheating has occured will be fine for years

:D love you too

In all seriousness, there is no shame in sensible well structure questions and between everyone on the forum there are few questions that can't be answered or suggestions made to resolve it.

not true.

poor design, cavitation and poor heat transfer. poor cooling design and common sequential HGF.
