I know it's not clever to get yourself into a situation where you might get stuck and have no-one with you as back-up, but following on from another thread about helping people out, I got to thinking that in most genuine looking situations, I would go out of my way to help just about any member of the public if I was able to do so, this got me to thinking and here's my idea.

I use my Landy mostly for commuting and for towing my small inflatable boat when going fishing. I mostly launch at Catterline on the east coast (summer months) or at Taynuilt on Loch Etive (winter months,) but if I was to get myself stuck either on the beach, or if a mechanical problem arose while I was out and about, it would be fantastic to know someone who might help me out of difficulty should I be in their area.

MY LOCATION AND WHAT I CAN OFFER

I live in Blairgowrie, Perthshire and would be willing to help out any fellow LZ member who might get into difficulties while in my area, either passing through or resident here.

I can offer some mechanical knowledge, quite a few tools and manual assistance with roadside repairs. I can also offer help in the form of a Hawkeye diagnostics tool, a Haynes manual for a Defender TD5 or I can offer help in the form of a tow to get you out of trouble if that would help. As long as everything is legal and you accept full responsibility for any damage which could result from me helping you.

Depending upon my work commitments, I would be willing to help anyone within about 50 miles of my home location.

This leaves the problem of communications. So, my suggestion is this:
If any LZ member is either resident in, or planning a trip into or through, my small area of Scotland, send me a PM for my mobile number giving me your mobile number and a few rough details of your home location and availability, or your planned trip through my area. The only time my mobile is switched off is when I'm asleep for work, but as I work more or less constant night-shift, contact should be possible in the wee hours of the night and most week-ends.

With all due respect to other members on here, please do not make any off-topic posts on this thread, but anyone willing to join in with this idea could post their location, how they can help and the rough area they will help out in.

I would also ask that if you know of someone in your area that will help others, then, if they agree to join in, swap contact details with each other so that if you are not available, you can pass on details of those who need help to someone else in your area if they are available & willing to take your place and help out.

If you have any comments to add, please PM them or start a "Comments on Local Rescue" thread, then if this thread is kept all "nice and tidy," it might even become a "sticky."

great idea Clan but do a SEARCH FFS!!! :D we's already got a rescue thread. for peeps what get stuck..
Yes I know, but it's designed along the lines of INTERNATIONAL rescue.

The map doesn't help much if you are stuck on a stony beach in Catterline with no way to surf the net to find people nearby who might help. Yes the map is a great idea, but JimmyWhoDunnit in Inverbervie might not wanna help WeeFatArse stuck on the beach at Catterline and WeeFatArse might not have JimmyWhoDunnit's contact details. My hopes were to find people who will help each other not just stick a pin in the map saying where they live.

I was trying to find easy ways to contact anyone local to me and where I might be on a regular basis. Also, in return, I am trying to offer help to anyone who might be in my area.

International rescue was not meant seriously.
The object was just to have a few tel numbers ( I have about 50) of LZ peeps.
If yu got into trouble, you phoned any of the peeps yu had a number for and they would post a "HELP" thread on here, on your behalf.
They would do the co-ordination and keep in touch with the the rescuers and the rescuee.
That way intermittent phone probs could be minimised.
The co-ordinator would dish out tel numbers and map refs to those of use.

Not a good idea to post " there's a disco stuck at land ranger xxxx - he is leaving it there for a day or so".
That system seems to have worked well when it has been used.
The best thing is to keep a list of lzers on yo phone. It don't matter If they are local. I can post "Buster is stuck in innerlochrie" as easily as someone in Glasgow.

Yep, that sounds like a fair idea - pretty much what I was trying to do. With the exception of if I'm available to anyone at a time when they needed me I could be there without having to check the interweb etc. So for instance if Beneagles was in difficulty and I was within a reasonable distance, I'd be more than happy to go and help him, then my thoughts extended to anyone on LZ who might be passing through my area etc.

Personally, If I was gonna make a trip to Carlisle, I'd like to know of anyone on my route who might help out if I got into difficulties and then I would be happy to spend a few minutes contacting anyone on my route who has said they would help out if possible. This way, if I was in Buster's area and knew he'd help if needed, then I'd ba able to contact him directly if I got stuck, if he couldn't help, he could let me know of someone else in his area that might be able to help instead. It seemed like a good idea to me. Likewise, if you were gonna be heading to Pitlochry and passing through my area of the A9 then you'd know to gimme a shout if you needed help.

LZ rescue is additional too and not instead of helping ya local mates.
To keep a list of peeps on a long route would be too complicated. Just contact anyone and when they post in here, local peeps would respond.

I'd be happy to help anyone around the Clitheroe, Blackburn, Burnley sort of area, not too sure how much help mechanically I would be, but i'll give it a go;););)

Even just local knowledge of where to get bits could be useful. I've just added my first phone number under LZ FRIENDS. Hopefully, there will be more to come.
