To be honest, I must credit all of you who helped. It is remarkable the amount of information that you all offered, and that was helpful in my decision.

I am not enticed by Suzuki, Toyota, etc. I love British & Italian cars. Sometimes I can fall for German taxis. But, in principle, either British class, or Italian passion.

I am now considering the Fiat Panda 4x4. I know, I know... not the same league, but with these insurance prices ... what can I do?

Good choice. Cheap and cheerful, but good off road as well. You can take your kid for the odd laning trip when you aren't on school runs. :)

I found an underwriter, Admiral, willing to offer a reasonable rate for a Defender @ £443/year.

A friend suggested to try this: https://www.comparethemarket.com/ and I discovered that the problem was my wife's license. She has two: non EU with 10 years, and full UK with less than 1 year. I removed her from the policy and it was still pretty steep. I then accepted the always garaged clause (day and night) and, with that clause, it dropped down to a reasonable amount.

I'm back in the game!

PS: how can an insurance check if the car was locked in my garage or parked on my private driveway in case of theft?

Well that's better news.

Having a license doesn't help much towards NCB, or "I am a good/safe driver. That can only be proved by time you have been insured.
As for how they could tell? They couldn't as long as you lied when if/you have to claim. Always garaged day and night is difficult to cover up especially when you report a theft as between midnight and 7am and the mini is in the garage when the cops come:oops:. So please tread carefully in saying what you are saying and I dont want to know or be involved.

Now with that said when you get it I would love to see it and help if I can, so please keep us updated with any potentials if you are unsure. Don't be afraid to take a step back and ask others.

Good luck now in your search.

My my ... I had completely forgotten about your British banter! It brought back school memories (expelled from three of your schools in 5 years)!

So, back to business.

I know. Was hoping you had bought one, and was looking forward to the pics. :) I like Fiats, my wife has a Qubo, and one of my exes had a Fiat Abarth convertible.
I used to drive a 124 Abarth 1.8 quattro valvole (red/black) in 1984! I then sold it for a Pininfarina Spider Europa Abarth 2.0 VX. Lovely cars. Worth a fortune now!

But, I bet, you will love this one even more:

This is now in my garage in Naples (Italy), but it's not mine! It's a good friend who has no space, and asked me to keep it for him. It went up for auction, it reached €200,000 and it was under his reserve price. He kept it! There were 12 originally, only 9 came back from Brazil, and only 1 survives.

Of course I will! May I ask what area you live in?

I would very much appreciate pointers to good Landis for sale within the budget!

It just happens here, we have a bit of banter in between updates. Its normal its a bit of an affliction, usually comes with owning a LR like a nervous laugh to take away the thought of what you have done and how much its gonna cost. ;) .

My comment was a forum type "see/help" not a physical. as I am in Bulgaria (not sure you noticed), east coast halfway down and inland a bit:).

I work with a trading firm that owns a subsidiary in Sofia and I am scheduled to fly there, sometime between Feb 10th and 15th. It would be nice to meet in person!
