Just weeks after getting rid of the EGR & its ancillaries I get this...

Surely the recirculated exhaust gas held counter pressure against the coolant side within the EGR cooler, but it shouldn't leak without it!! Wonder how close I was from getting coolant into the cylinders...

Anybody bypassed the EGR cooler completely? Inlet/outlet hoses are different size so some sort of crossover nipple would need to be fabricated, same with trying to route the coolant directly from the metal pipe coming from around the engine back to the coolant expansion tank.

Could use metallic gaskets (oil centrifuge discharge line ones fit perfectly -- LRJ100000) but just don't have any confidence left in the blasty thing.

Rgds

You took the easy route and blanked off the cooler leaving it connected to the exhaust manifold.
Proper way to do it is to blank off the exhaust manifold then remove the cooler completely. As you say you have to sort the coolant lines but its no big deal. Took me all of about five minutes to reroute the piping.
Unless you damaged the cooler there is no way to get coolant into the cylinders just by blanking the cooler off.

I did mine the same as yours with no probs.

As Shifty says, there shouldnt be any coolant in the exhaust system. ( the coolant circulates in the jacket around the EGR pipe ).

I,d have it off and have a look in there.

Del.

The EGR cooler is no longer connected to the exhaust manifold. Modified manifold prior to re installation:

But Shifty you're right, supported by the fact that the EGR blanking kit came with 3 plates (1 for exhaust manifold & 2 for EGR cooler) did not bother to re route the coolant feed hose & remove the EGR cooler for good.

The coolant going into the inlet manifold scenario was if this (coolant leaking into the exhaust gas cooling tubes within the EGR cooler) would've happened BEFORE I'd blanked it off.

Thank you for straightening me out.

Not a case of straightening you out. Just logic and previous experience.
By removing the complete cooler you get a lot more access between the radiator and the engine which makes things easier to reach if you need to.

If you know how the cooler is constructed then unless it is damaged there is no way for coolant to mix with exhaust gas other than a faulty head gasket or a cracked cylinder head or cylinder liner. Even if the cooler was leaking since you removed the connecting pipe from the cooler to the EGR valve body any coolant could not enter the inlet tract and I strongly doubt it could flow against the hot exhaust gasses back into the cylinders with the engine running.

If you put the cooler on eBay you could probably recover the cost of the EGR blanking kit and then some. Ask your LR dealer how much they would charge for the cooler and make sure you are sitting down when they tell you.

Hi Shifty. Been on the LZ forum quite a lot and you seem to kow your stuff! I've been thinking of blanking off the egr valve on my TD5, and after having a look at the bits and bobs involved (and whilst there cleaned the dirty MAF sensor) would you, in your experience, blank off the egr AND remove the heat exchanger? My ecu has been re-mapped and it is a lot beter, but to take full advantage should I blank off the egr? Advice greatly appreciated.

Don't want to step on Shiftys toes but this is a no brainer.

YES blank the EGR (really you should have done it before it was re mapped) if you want more out of it De cat the exhaust as well.

And as has been discussed remove the cooler and reroute the cooling pipes.

Thanks Minidod. I have read loads of forum discussions on the egr subject and all (including yours) say definitely blank it off. Only niggle in the back of my mind is if it is such a worthless thing, why do LR fit them? Yes I know its to decrease the NOx levels in the exhaust but if I blank it off (and the heat exchanger) is there any risk regarding the M.O.T. test?
I think I just need to do it!

a mate of mine works in a LR stealers and he told me it does'nt make a tinkers cuss of differance to the emissions test ;)

Does anybody have pictures of how to remove the egr cooler?
Mine is also leaky and needs to be removed?

What parts do i need?

you could just link the inlet and outlet coolant pipe together bypassing cooler ,though its better to get a kit and fit the blank to end of exhaust manifold and replace the valve and removing cooler and pipes altogether
