Sorted it out, and to be honest, it must've been shot since I bought it. Thanks to this forum alone, i ordered the GKN drive shaft, from Island 4x4 (cheapest I could find £140+vat) on the Friday, had it delivered on Tuesday, and fitted today.
I am now aware of the fact that the £50 shafts for freelander 1's, although fit the fl1 facelift, do not work as you would expect.
They DO NOT stop the wobble.
The reason I said it must've been shafted since purchase, is that it now drives like a new car, smooth as owt. It used to moan when slowing through the gears. It used to pop (likened to hitting a chip pan with a wooden spoon, funny owld noise it was) on lock, which I initially thought was the IRD going pop, but thats solid. In the later stages, and predominantly the gear knob, the whole car would shake under hard acceleration, well less of a shake and more of a heavy wobble.
I removed the vcu and props after two weeks of ownership due to apparent box wind up, ruling that out straight away.
I checked all the mounts and bushes, which are suspect components but all seemed fine, apart from drop links, which have excessive play, and which I now know is the root of my knocking, on speed bumps.
Overall, well pleased. £168 and half an hour, was a small price to pay, compared to my worst fears.

And just to note, I didn't remove the bottom ball joint to pull the hub, I removed the two hub carrier bolts on the strut as access was a hell of a lot easier, and it only needed minimal support to relocate. Much better when you're alone ;-)

Buzzing my tats off.

So drop links to do, and a small leak on rear diff, from an oil seal, needs sorting before new VCU arrives.
Then I'm done till next time.

Nice when it all comes together rather than getting worse as you try to fix it

I actually noticed my own, massive sigh of relief after driving that first 50yds, with no wobble.
I felt like a kid at Xmas.

Like you say, it's a nice situation to be in.

Cheers

Glad you are sorted now.
Which side was causing your vibration? I'm in the same boat and just fitted an eBay special shaft to the offside. My vibration doesn't appear worse but it sure ain't got better :(

Hi mate, 'twas near side. The thing with yours being the mk1, I'm not sure that the special would still wobble. But the specials listed for 00-06 do, as they're missing a complete set of bearings, as LR won't release the patents for aftermarket manufacture. The same as they won't with the headlight guards.
Hope you get sorted soon buddy.

On another note, have you checked the IRD output bearings, where the shaft goes in?

I changed the Off side as that was the one that the grease has escaped from. I changed the shaft but to no avail. The IRD output bearing isn't to bad, there is always a bit of play in output bearings anyway. This weekend I'm planning on fitting the Offside joint on the near side. This should present a new running surface which I hope cures the vibration. If it does I'll know to replace the shaft.
