Have posted this on the Introduce yourself forum and Wiltshire Landy Man has told me to run away from it...Wondered what everyone thought here?

Just agreed to buy a 1999 V plate DHSE with 129k for £3800, she has two owners and a good history, they replaced the air suspension compressor at 100k. I read some reviews and they say dont touch them but you guys seem to love them. Used to own a 300 tdi Disco which I loved and never gave me a days trouble (apart from the £650 diesel pump!) Did wonder if it was worth paying the extra money for a 1999- £4k was my budget as there seem to be lots of 1996/7 around with similar mileage. Wanted this cos it was blue and they all seemed to be green!

Tell me I am doing the right thing and that she is a fair price! Picking up on Tuesday

tbh i think it is a little high in price, and all so the last thing to worry about is the colour. befor you part with any money make sure everything works as it should, if you can ask somebody to go have a look with you. rose tinted glasses and all that. best of luck and i not trying to put you off, but if you buy a bad one it going to cost big time..

if your happy with it then buy it,but by your post i take it your having second thourghts so have it checked by the aa or another mechanic you trust

Well as J says try all the buttons and make sure the eas works goes up goes down and not slugish about it and give yourself a 1k budget for odd jobs and most of all are you happy to to the odd jobs yourself if not don't buy a P38.

On the flip side if you get a good one they are great fun and you will not want your drive to end.

good luck and welcome to the mad house

Tony:)

Would they not have been done at the same time as the compressor? See I am a real rookie. The guy has had it 5 years, I have asked for a list of what has been done to it. Its in bloody Wales but was really struggling to find anything decent nearer - we live in Derby. If someone gets a good one they seem to hang onto it.

I can't comment on the price (here they cost 2x or 3x more than in the UK) but I'd recommend against spending 3700£ if your on a 4000£ budget. You'll quickly spend more than £300 if there's anything wrong with it.

Probably not. The compressor more than likely gave up because the bags were shot in the first place (filling leaky springs quickly shags the compressor)

I changed my air springs at 70k and my original compressor still purrs away as we approach 100k. Although it is starting to sound a little tired.

Air springs have dropped in price and Island 4x4 are doing standard ones for £49.00 (each) inc vat and postage. So its not such an expensive job if you do it yourself.
