Update on my side. I decided to go with my heart and I have purchased a 2012 defender with a view to hopefully keeping it for longer and having more confidence in doing things myself. Currently being prepared by the garage so will let you have pictures once done.

Obviously it cost more but will serve my needs a little better I hope.

There's a thread going on a NZ Landie forum posted by a fella, who's not had a 4wd before and wants to buy 1. He had looked at a new 5 door Jimny at $45k but then his boss said that he was changing his 2004 V8 D2 HSE (in immaculate condition) and would he like it for $8k.

So he was asking about pros & cons of the 2.

He then had the D2 for a day as like an extended test drive. The pictures came back with fording rivers etc :D (he was with friends who are experienced). So even after his head said that he was a right plonker for considering a car he has just had to put 55 liters of fuel in to cover the 250km of driving.... his heart has made the decision.

Dunno if I should put a pic up, but its really nice...

Great stuff. Everyone thought I was mad but I have really enjoyed having it as my daily driver just not so much on longer journeys. If I had the need I would keep it along with the puma and 90 200tdi but I wouldn’t be able to keep them all going and they need to be driven.

I fitted rear camera on my D2. Wireless system I bought at the Classic show few years back. Easy to fit, small camera screwed to rear bumper, I had it angled to see towbar.
Wire went to small receiver behind removeable plastic panel in boot, power taken from reversing light.
Screen was upfront ahead of the gear lever on console. Worked great apart from occasionally picking up BBC1. Honestly !

Is the new Jimny much bigger than the old? A little too small for me, but I can see the appeal of a small 4x4

Yes, it's a lot bigger than the original, similar in proportion to a Jeep Wrangler. Motoring journalist Jonny Smith had one for about a year. He loved the thing, but he had to sell it for personal reasons.
