Hi, on thursday afternoon i went to buy a kawasaki green discovery 200tdi with lift kit and big wheels. drove it back from enfield to oxford and was all fine, just a bit scary going over 60 on the motorway as it was all over the road due to the big tyres.
drove to uni in it and on my way home, pulling on to a mainroad and changing into second gear it lost drive. the engine is still running fine, the clutch seems to be fine as when I engage it in any gear the prop shafts still spin, but the diffs dont seem to be doing anything. :(

I am completely new to landies but do know my way around cars as I am heavily in to VW's.

Did I blow the diffs?
Does anyone have an idea of what went wrong here?

Welcome to the club for people who have knocked the diff lock into neutral gear and can't find hi range again....you will get it back again....let us know. We really are very worried.

The little gearstick sometimes needs persuading vigorously and robustly that it should go into a gear ... Not quite a BFH (Big feckin' 'ammer) but a definitely firm pressure, whilst letting clutch out slightly often helps .. ;)

Or could be halfshafts, or diffs, or numerous other problems ... ;)

Are both props spinning? it would be very unlikely that both diffs would fail at exactly the same point when driving on road...

Whichever prop is spinning is the axle you need to look at, or get the centre diff lock working (Says it all if the lifted landy with big tyres has no working diff lock!)

something similar happened to mine a couple of years back, turned out my transfer box was completely shot, managed to get one of a scrapper quite cheap but it took a bit of shopping around, otherwise you could be looking at £300 / £400 for a recon one.

Good luck mate.

Could easily be that, say, a rear half-shaft went, so it was running in difflock, and the OP has just had a front halfshaft go .. which is a pretty easy fix .. ;)

Thanks for a ll the reply guys.
I just got it towed back home by my mates scooby (it nearly died on a hill)
Im not sure if the transfer bocx is gone or the half shafts.
It is definitely engaging when I put it the little gearstick in high and low ratios but it doesnt move whatsoever, but I can definitely hear it clicking in.
also when looking from the front on the left hand wheel there is quite a lot of oil leaking from what looks to me like a CV joint (the huge ball thingy on the half shaft).
Could that have anything to do with it?

I have only just taken one pic of it, but I ll put it up as soon as i get home.

go out side and push the small G/stick to the passenger side and see what happens :) . just putting it into high and low wont acheave much .

were I you i'd be getting the tow truck to relay you and the car back to the tosser in Enfield you bought it from - assuming you're telling us everything... not missing out the part where you put it in difflock in the uni car park just before you lost drive
