I think it's like my earlier posts says .. the seller had a broken halfshaft and was running it in difflock, the buyer didn't know it was only in 2wd and broke another .. so now two broken halfshafts = no go whether in difflock or not.

Hopefully it's that simple for him .. ;)

Unfortunately by the sounds of it, there's other stuff that's wrong with it. I think 669hoff might have further issues to deal with ... welcome to Landy ownership ...

I ve got a friend coming around this afternoon who is a mechanic to have a look at it.
So what would I need to do to fix?
just change the broken half shafts in each axle or is there more to it?

Sorry about all the questions, I suppose I should have done my research before I went out and bought a landy

That's about it ... but don't do anything else to it to start with. When you know it works then do a full service, all oils etc etc .. including gearbox and axles, and all filters.

Easy check for which shaft is broken is to jack each wheel up, spin it and see if it turns the prop. if one does and one doesn't on each axle then it's the one that doesn't turn the prop that might have the broken halfshaft .. When you take the shaft out, if it's all intact then check the other end of the same axle, if that's still intact then you probably have diff problems. If the halfshaft is broke it can be a bs'tard to get the other bit out, depending where it's broke, 'cos you'll have difficulty removing the diff if the splines from the shaft are still located. Most sem to break near the cap though, so Mole grips might work .. ;)

No worries, you've got a Landy, you've never got nothing to do now, there's ALWAYS something needs fixing, checking, repairing, hitting ......

thanks for the advice, I will check all the wheels first to see which half shafts are broken.

also there is oil leaking from the osf half shaft, could that have something to do with it?

and the one on the other side looks pretty new:

Yup, could be cv too .. The leaky one looks like a friends who had both a broken half-shaft and broken wheel bearing .. one or the other took the other out and shagged the hub seal at the same time .. ;) I'd start with that side first.

Rear axle is easier as there aren't any cv joints in there.

I just had another look at it and it is also leaking oil from the osr hub.
would that suggest the offside front and rear drive shafts have snapped, they knackered the half shaft oil seal and therefore it is leaking now, have I got this right?

also I am looking at replacement ones, do I need 24 spline or 10 spline for my G plate 200tdi?

Should be 10 spline, but don't order anything till you know for sure .. get the halfshafts out first, see what they are and if it is actually just the halfshafts .. No point buying them when you might need the money for diffs ... ;)

yesterday I pulled the rear half shafts out, but they both seem fine, they are not snapped and the splines aren't rounded off.

so I take it, its the rear diff thats fecked, right?

to swap the diff, does the axle need to come off the car?

nope
if yu still have the halfshafts out, tiz now easy :)
undo back end of rear prop and lash it out of the way.
undo ring of nuts around diff (if its not a Salisbury one) with a jack under nose of diff.
(tiz a good idea to leave one at the top just hand tight)
remove last nut and lower jack SLOWLY (coz they is bloody heavy)
oh - and put a trip tray under the diff, coz all the oil wil drain out as soon as the gasket seal is broken.
