Ok, so most of you guys now know what i pay for insurance. And it's a hell of a lot, but it's one of the cheapest quotes i can get, for only third part fire and theft.

Now... My mum has a policy thats fully comp, and with other car owners permission is also insured to drive other cars.

What i was wondering was...

If i bought an old banger with a low insurance group, that would be cheap as chips for me to insure fully comp, would I then be insured to drive my landy third party?

I know i wouldn't be covered for fire and theft on my landy if i took this route but i'd probably take it into my own hands anyway if the scenario required.

Just thinking of ways to get the bills down as low as poss cos of this fricken reccession

You'd very likely not be covered cos yer name is on the v5 for the landy. However getting your fiolks insured even if they dont drive it may alter the price a lot.You live with em?

No.
The "other car" extension only applies to cars that you don't own. You don't think Insurance companies are that stupid do you?
Also, most policies don't include the "other car" extension for drivers under 25.

although im pretty sure i used my 3rd party cover off me other car to drive me rangie home the day i bought it.But they wouldnt insure me after that. Not really relevent to this tho.....

Aye, i still live with my folks. My parents car insurance is in my mums name as she is the owner for tax purposes but my dads insured to drive it.

They tried to get me on their policy but direct line are uptight bastids when it comes to young drivers.

I could put the insurance in my dads name and put me as a named driver but he's had so many convictions and so many points it wouldn't really make a difference. I tried once and as far as remember the quotes weren't too far apart.

If my dads name was on the V5 of my landy, would this be a possibility?

leave the v5 as it is cos that adds owners to the car and will probbably reduce the value when you come to sell it.Get quotes for you and your mum together on the car and if shes got a clean liscence with no claims they might reduce it.Dont be afraid to ask the insurance company for the cheapest option, they should help you out. Also when they give you a price say "can you do a bit better on that" worse they can say is no.

Cheers for the advice, my mums got a clean license so that's worth a try.

As far as owners go i'm not planning on selling it before it needs to be scrapped, i'll keep it for as long as it can keep running now.

Psst its a freelander.....scrap prices dont change that much:p:p:p

In that case try the above^^^^ if that dont work get quotes for your mum as the owner main driver and owner and you as named driver.Although you wont earn any no claims then! These companys are riobbing bastids and they will get you somehow.TRY ADRIAN FLUX!!!!!

Bear in mind, it's illegal for your mum to be main driver and you to be named if YOU are the main driver. Depends if you get caught or not. Plus as someone said before, you wont get NCB

My mum would be the main driver, she'd just be too ill to drive at that particular time. She got back troubles and all ;)

saying that though, i've just checked my emails after typing the above and i've got one off Adrian Flux. You'll never guess....

i met insurance companies head on again today. Work this one out.

I can insure and drive a highly modified Land Rover, with unlimited milage etc etc for £427.
I can insure and drive a highly modified metro, with a 160BHP VVC 1.8 engine, independant suspension, bigger brakes, full rollcage, etc, £600.

The BEST quote i managed for a completly standard 106 DIESEL, thats costing me £150, is £800.

insurance for modified vehicles used to be about 3 times more expensive than standard, based on the fact that 'modified' meant non standard parts so there was a safety risk. they also classed modified vehicle drivers as 'boy racers'.

recently insurance companies have realised that 'most' people who modify their vehicle are enthusiasts who will look after their vehicle and drive it more carefully because it isnt 'just another car' to them. this has lead to a decrease in the cost of modified vehicle insurance in recent years. it can also help alot if your a member of a car club of some description, as again this shows your more likely to deal with any problems before they become a danger and cause an accident that will cost the insurance company money.

The online quote form on Adrian Flux's website asks stuff like am i part of any clubs or forums etc. I'm thinking by ticking that box it brought it down quite a bit.

Ring flux up in person - Sometimes even cheaper :) Think they have a 4x4 Dept as well :)

Don't bother as they ask for evidence. However if you join landrovernet.com and have a bit of a search they used to and I think still do get a club discount with AdrianFlux.
